Jon M. Chu has recently spilled the beans on the upcoming HBO Max series adaptation of Kevin Kwan's "Crazy Rich Asians" novel. The director of "The Wicked" shares a major update on the project, stating that "It's a real thing." While the 45-year-old admits they have scripts ready, they are waiting for the official green light to proceed.
The director of "Now You See Me 2" points out that it's challenging to continue the story due to the significant changes in the characters in the first movie. "Our characters evolved so much in the first film that it's hard to maintain a one-to-one continuation," he explains.

However, Jon believes that despite the differences between the movie and the books, "Crazy Rich Asians" is still deeply inspired by the novel. "You couldn't go one-to-one, but we can use a lot of inspiration from the book to dig out more story from it," he adds.
The Warner Bros. TV series is being developed under the leadership of executive producer and showrunner Adele Lim, who also wrote the movie with Peter Chiarelli. Interestingly, Jon and Kevin also serve as executive producers on the show.
A source previously told "Deadline" that the series "will not replace the long-awaited sequel of the 2018 movie, but will be based on the same book series." The original movie, starring Henry Golding, Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Ken Jeong, and others, earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and broke several box office records at the time of its release.
