Jon M. Chu is offering a glimpse into the eagerly awaited film that delves into the life and career of pop princess Britney Spears. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director shared, "My admiration for Britney spans many years, though I can't divulge much about her story just yet." He reminisced, "I first saw her perform as one of twelve acts at the Shrine Auditorium. I've attended numerous of her concerts, always admiring her from afar. She embodies a generation that grew up in the late '90s and 2000s, and her narrative deserves to be meticulously recounted. It mirrors many aspects of our own lives."
Chu further elaborated, "We're still in the nascent stages; the script hasn't been penned, nor have we secured a writer. However, in this preliminary vision, I believe it's fundamentally about how we perceive individuals—young people, celebrities whom we feel we own, women, and mothers. We need to reassess our treatment of them."
Variety reports that Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to Spears' best-selling memoir, The Woman in Me. This acclaimed tome documents her ascent to fame, her relationship with fellow child star Justin Timberlake, including a pregnancy and abortion during their time together, as well as her life under a stringent 13-year conservatorship. Chu has been chosen to helm the project, with Marc Platt serving as producer.
In September, Spears posted on Instagram with a twist, writing, "The project I might be involved in isn't a straightforward biopic…it's a fictional musical where I portray an exceptionally intelligent character!!! It's truly humbling to be in such esteemed company as Jon Chu!!!"
