During the Festival of Remembrance, Kate Middleton allowed her heartfelt emotions to surface, marking her first significant royal engagement since successfully concluding her chemotherapy treatments. The solemn occasion aimed to honor the dedication and selflessness of military personnel.

Footage captured by The Sun revealed Princess Kate battling to hold back tears during a standing ovation dedicated to the troops of World War II. Later in the evening service, her emotional state was even more evident, with her breath seemingly caught in a poignant moment. For Kate, this evening symbolized a deeply felt return to public life after months of absence, following a particularly challenging year marked by her own and King Charles' cancer diagnoses and treatments—a year that Prince William described as "brutal."

"She stands as a vital cornerstone of the royal family, carrying immense symbolic and practical importance as the future Queen," royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith shared with PEOPLE. "It was heartening to see her out again. One cannot yet say she has fully returned...but she is indeed on the way back."

This year's festival appearance held special significance, marking Princess Kate's first major event since announcing her completion of chemotherapy on September 9th. In March, the Princess of Wales had disclosed her cancer treatment, stepping away from the public eye for much of the year to prioritize her health.

On November 9th, Prince William displayed a rare moment of public affection, wrapping a protective arm around his wife's back several times as they entered Royal Albert Hall. Bedell Smith noted to PEOPLE that this heartwarming gesture echoed Prince William's recent comments about 2024 being the "hardest year of his life," amid the cancer diagnoses of both Princess Kate and his father, the King, revealing a profound desire to shield his wife.

"With his arm draped gently around her, he exhibited a palpable sense of protectiveness, which ties into his earlier remark about this being a particularly 'brutal' year," Bedell Smith revealed to PEOPLE. "One can only surmise that he had witnessed her enduring a challenging ordeal throughout the year," she speculated.

"It's not often that he expresses his emotions so openly. His solicitous and protective demeanor was both understandable and genuine. There was a clear rationale behind it—she was about to embark on a significant event where she would be in the public eye," Bedell Smith added. "His behavior carried an undeniable element of reassurance."

The Festival of Remembrance, a British royal tradition, serves as a gesture of support ahead of Remembrance Sunday, honoring the wartime sacrifices of British and Commonwealth Armed Forces personnel. This year's iteration celebrated the contributions of the World War II generation on the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

After the Festival, Princess Kate made her first consecutive royal appearance at the Cenotaph Service on Remembrance Sunday. On November 10, she stood on the balcony of a government building overlooking the war memorial during the service, observing as King Charles and Prince William laid wreaths.

The wreath laid by the Princess of Wales following the service bore a poignant message: "In memory of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We will remember them." Although her participation in the Remembrance events—the Festival of Remembrance on Saturday and Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph—should not be construed as a full resumption of royal duties, fans were heartened to see the Princess of Wales looking well and in attendance.

In her September 9 announcement about completing chemotherapy, Princess Kate expressed her "eagerness to return to work and engage in more public appearances in the coming months when I can." It was subsequently revealed that the royal was hopeful to join her family at the Cenotaph Service on Remembrance Sunday, an event she has never missed since her marriage to William in 2011.

"As a senior member of the royal family, participating in these ceremonial events is undoubtedly important to her," said Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen.

Upcoming for the Princess of Wales is her annual Christmas carol concert, confirmed by PEOPLE to take place in December.
