Meryl Streep and Martin Short may have cleverly concealed the blossoming of their romance from their eager fans, but Page Six has uncovered the intriguing detail that the two have been sharing a secret love affair for "considerably more than a year now." A confidential source has revealed to us that the romance between the co-stars of "Only Murders in the Building" was a "pleasant shock" that caught even them off guard.
"Meryl couldn't resist falling for Martin," shares the insider. "He's a gentleman who keeps her in stitches and radiates positivity. She adores his company."
According to our source, neither Streep, 75, nor Short, 74, "were actively seeking a relationship when their love story began." The couple's "circle of friends and family, including their children, thoroughly approve of their relationship and find them utterly charming together."
Short and the "Devil Wears Prada" actress's romance unfolded after Page Six exposed in October 2023 that Streep had quietly separated from her husband, Don Gummer, back in 2017. The pair had been married for four decades. Streep was previously in a relationship with actor John Cazale, whom she tenderly cared for until his tragic death from lung cancer in March 1978.
Meanwhile, the Tony Award winner was married to his wife Nancy Dolman for three decades until she passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010. "Meryl and Martin have forged a deep connection over their shared loss of their late spouses," who both succumbed to cancer, says the insider.
Our source informs Page Six that the duo is content with the current status of their relationship and has no intentions of tying the knot. "Meryl is still legally married to Don, but even if she were divorced, marriage is simply not something that interests her or Martin," explains the insider. "They're delighted with their life as a dating couple."
"They've been friends for years and share a network of mutual acquaintances." Although the pair has "navigated similar social circles, they never seriously considered each other in a romantic capacity before now."
Representatives for Streep and Short did not immediately respond to Page Six's requests for comment.
