Naz Reid is reeling from the heart-wrenching loss of his sister, Toraya Reid. According to a press release from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the 28-year-old sister of the NBA star was discovered with fatal gunshot wounds near the exit of an apartment building in Jackson Township, New Jersey, on September 6.
Jackson Township police officers rushed to the scene after receiving frantic calls about gunfire and an unresponsive woman lying in the roadway, as detailed in the release. Upon their arrival, authorities spotted a 29-year-old man, later identified as Shaquille Green, sprinting down a nearby street. He was promptly taken into custody.
"A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit," the press release declared, "identified Green—who had been in a dating relationship with Ms. Reid—as the individual responsible for her tragic death."
Shaquille has since been transported to an Ocean County jail, where he awaits a detention hearing. He faces a litany of charges, including murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, all in connection with Toraya’s untimely demise.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Minnesota Timberwolves player paid a poignant tribute to his older sister by sharing a heartfelt series of throwback photos on his Instagram Stories.
Back in 2023, the 26-year-old Naz had effusively praised his sister’s unwavering care for him and their younger sister, Jakahya Smith. “My older sister is super protective; she treats us like she’s our parent,” Naz confided to Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine that December. “Because I was the only boy, everyone was always fussing over me since I was playing basketball in another city. So, everyone made sure that I was okay.”
Meanwhile, Jakahya took to social media to express her profound grief and seething anger, branding the alleged killer a “coward” and fervently praying that his loved ones never have to endure “this type of pain.”
“We always send our condolences and say we could never imagine ourselves in that situation…..and yet here I am,” she wrote on Facebook on September 6. “All the way home, I was just hoping and praying it was some kind of sick joke that you would call me and tell me it wasn’t true. I’m disgusted. I’m hurt. But most of all, I’m angry. I will never be okay.”
In a second, emphatic post, Jakahya made it abundantly clear that her sister deserved to be remembered on her own terms. “Imma say this one time and one time f**king only. My sister has a name,” Jakahya wrote. “She is not just some girl. She’s not just the NBA superstar’s sister. She has a name, and that is Toraya Reid. Respect her s**t or don’t mention her at all.”
