Nicole Kidman was utterly taken aback by one particular review of her soon-to-be-released movie, Babygirl. "I find this film incredibly liberating; I truly hope it is for others too," the 57-year-old actress confided to The Hollywood Reporter in an article published on December 4th, Wednesday. "Some viewers have deemed it the most disturbing film they've ever laid eyes on, and my immediate response is, 'Oh no, I deeply apologize,'" she remarked with sincerity.
Scheduled for a December 25th release, Babygirl casts Kidman in the role of Romy, a CEO who embarks on an illicit affair with her intern, Samuel (played by Harris Dickinson). For Kidman, this sexually charged narrative resonated deeply. "Women often get sidelined in their careers when it comes to their sexuality. So, portraying such a character was truly enchanting," she revealed to THR. "From the moment I read the script, I felt, 'Yes, this is a voice I haven't heard before, a realm I haven't explored, nor do I believe audiences have.' My character holds immense power yet grapples with self-discovery, uncertain of her identity, desires, and aspirations despite seemingly having it all. This is incredibly relatable."
Kidman further confessed that she found the film both "raw and perilous" to make. "I was astounded that they entrusted us with the funds to bring it to life," she admitted. "Its sexuality wasn't tailored for a 20-year-old or even a 30-year-old." Despite her extensive filmography, this project, particularly its sexual undertones, allowed the Australian star to embrace her extroverted spirit.
"I still blush when I think about it – it's absolutely crazy," she admitted to THR about her portrayal of multiple orgasms in the film. "But perhaps that's a positive sign. I'm fascinated by exploring such dimensions, albeit I'm not naturally extroverted. While acting, I was completely immersed in the character. Revealing such intimate aspects feels too sacred to disclose openly."
Dickinson, Kidman's 28-year-old co-star, previously spoke about filming those intimate scenes with the legendary actress, noting the remarkable chemistry between them. "We'd consult with the intimacy coordinator and then Nicole and I would take charge, respecting each other's boundaries," he shared with Variety in October. "The coordinator would ask, 'What are your comfort levels, what vision do you have as a director, what are you comfortable portraying?' They facilitate the process delicately, ensuring it doesn't disrupt the scene's authenticity."
