"Race Across the World" has mourned the loss of a cherished former contestant, Sam Gardiner, who, alongside his mother Jo, graced the second season of the BBC reality series in 2019. Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that the 24-year-old passed away in a car accident.
In a heart-wrenching statement released by the police, it was revealed that Sam was traveling solo in a white Volkswagen in Manchester, England, on the evening of May 26, when his vehicle veered off the road and rolled over. Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his wounds, as confirmed in a subsequent statement that identified Sam as the victim.
"His family has been notified and is being supported by specially trained officers during this trying time," the statement emphasized. "They have requested privacy as they grapple with this devastating loss."
The Greater Manchester Police also shared a poignant message from Sam's parents, Jo and Andrew, who expressed their profound love for their son. "Sam was adored by his family and left us far too soon," they wrote. "Words can never fully encapsulate the light, joy, and energy he brought into our lives, but we cherish the memories that made him so unique. As a son, brother, and nephew, he was loyal, humorous, and fiercely protective."
Reflecting on their son's experience on "Race Across the World," Jo and Andrew shared how the show "opened his eyes to the wonders of adventure and travel" and how he "touched everyone he met along the way." "Sam brought warmth, laughter, and a touch of chaos wherever he went," they concluded. "He has left a gaping void in our hearts. We will miss him endlessly, but we will also remember him with smiles, tall tales, and a love that will forever endure."
A spokesperson for "Race Across the World," in a statement shared by the BBC, confirmed that a private funeral would be held for friends and family. "We are all deeply saddened by the tragic news of Sam's passing," the spokesperson continued. "Everyone who worked with him and watched him could see how precious and transformative the trip was for him and his mother Jo."
The spokesperson further highlighted Sam's integral role within the "Race Across the World" family since his filming days. "Sam embraced the seven-week journey with immense energy, love, and determination, traveling from Mexico to Argentina alongside his mother, captivating audiences with their adventures and special bond," they added.
Following the news of Sam's demise, Emon Choudhury, the season two winner of "Race Across the World," paid a heartfelt tribute to his friend and former castmate. "Sam was pure sunshine in human form," Emon wrote on June 1. "His kindness was a beacon for anyone fortunate enough to cross his path. He made us feel seen, supported, and braver than we ever imagined." He added, "With every warm smile and encouraging word, he reminded us that life's greatest treasures are the connections we make and the love we share."
