When discussing her romantic status, Sabrina Carpenter harbors a belief that all commentary surrounding it borders on idiocy, or perhaps, sheer futility. Six months after her split with Barry Keoghan, which made headlines, the "Manchild" singer subtly hinted at her current relationship status during an interview with Rolling Stone, published on June 12th. "Am I doing the single thing right now?" she rhetorically pondered. "I'm navigating the terrain of being 25, whatever that entails." Though she refrained from dropping names or describing any gentlemen in white jackets with broad accents, Carpenter, who recently turned 26, did open up about how her relationships have shaped her career.
Reflecting on online rumors, she explained, "You're like, 'That didn't happen then. That did happen then. You're overlooking some crucial details here.'" She emphasized that people often underestimate the complexities of being a young woman in relationships while enduring the scrutiny of strangers.
The Grammy Award winner, who described herself as "immune and numb" to comments about her love life, proudly recounted how she had adeptly managed the negative ramifications of fame. "If these commentators were to have their personal lives examined under the same microscope, I doubt they'd articulate themselves as eloquently as I have," she postulated. "I understand it's a timeless tale. It's just unfortunate that it persists."
Certainly, her romance with Keoghan, whom she dated for a year, isn't the first to grab headlines. Back in 2021, Olivia Rodrigo's breakthrough hit "driver's license" seemingly hinted at a love triangle involving her, Sabrina, and Joshua Bassett, with lyrics referencing a "blonde girl." In response, Sabrina subtly addressed the eyebrow-raising lyric in her song "Skin," released mere weeks later, singing, "Maybe blonde was the only rhyme."
When asked why she felt compelled to respond, she admitted, "I didn't intentionally do that." She continued, "That era taught me to trust myself, to believe that everything unfolds as it's meant to, and to acknowledge that relationships enter our lives for a reason. You might not see it at the time, but you'll understand later."
Rest assured, Sabrina has moved past all that nonsense. "I never think about it," she said of the Disney star love triangle. "I tried being a brunette, but it didn't suit me. So, this is what it is."
