Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan have parted ways, confirming to PEOPLE through a reliable source that their romantic journey has come to a temporary halt, roughly a year after they embarked on it. "Both being young and deeply focused on their respective careers, they've mutually decided to take a step back and breathe," revealed the insider, referring to the 32-year-old Keoghan and the 25-year-old Carpenter.
On Tuesday, December 3, representatives for both stars did not promptly respond to PEOPLE's request for further comments.
The whispers of their budding romance first gained traction when the pair were spotted enjoying a cozy dinner together in Los Angeles, early December 2023. Their paths initially crossed during Paris Fashion Week in September of the previous year, where they both attended a Givenchy showcase. Since then, they were frequently seen cheering each other on in various endeavors and on social media platforms, with Keoghan leaving endearing remarks on Carpenter's Instagram posts. The Saltburn star even lent his presence to his then-lover's Coachella performance in April and starred in her music video for "Please Please Please" in June.
During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning's Tracy Smith in October, Carpenter shared that when casting for the video, she leaned on her "unbiased, albeit slightly biased, opinion" — albeit she admitted it was convenient that Keoghan was seated right next to her at that moment. "I thought, 'Who's the best actor I could get for this music video?' And guess who was sitting next to me in a chair? He was thrilled about it," Carpenter recounted.
The admiration was mutual. Following the Recording Academy's announcement of the 2025 Grammy Awards nominations on November 8, Keoghan expressed his immense pride in Carpenter during an appearance on The Jess Cagle Show. Reacting to her six nominations, including one for Song of the Year for "Please Please Please," the Irish actor exclaimed, "Brilliant, I tell you. Absolutely brilliant. Feckin' brilliant, lads." He continued on the SiriusXM show, "No, I'm genuinely, incredibly happy for her. I'll have to call her soon," before playfully teasing the hosts for putting him on the spot.
When the hosts joked that he probably foresaw Carpenter's hit track heading to the Grammys while working on the video, he agreed, "Yes, definitely, definitely." "I don't know anyone who works as tirelessly as she does. Watching her work, her commitment, and the standards she sets is nothing short of awe-inspiring," Keoghan added. "Especially being part of that music video, she has a clear vision. She knows exactly what she wants."
