Sam Asghari recently engaged in an intimate conversation with the co-hosts of Page Six Radio, Danny Murphy and Ian Mohr, delving into the whirlwind romance and subsequent marriage to the iconic pop star, Britney Spears. Their story began on the set of Spears' 2016 music video for "Slumber Party," where Asghari played her love interest. They exchanged vows in 2022, but after 14 months of marriage, their journey together came to a close in August 2023, with the divorce being officially finalized in May 2024.
Reflecting on his marriage to Spears, the 31-year-old Asghari admitted, "I can't sit here and pretend it wasn't beneficial for me in some ways." The high-profile nature of their relationship posed unique challenges, but it also served as a springboard for Asghari to showcase his true self. "Being in such a public relationship... it essentially provided me with a platform to embrace my identity," he shared.
Their romance had catapulted Asghari's career, unlocking numerous opportunities. "We first crossed paths on an acting set," he reminisced. "We were colleagues before anything else." However, with the increased scrutiny came the pressure to prove himself as a talented actor in his own right. Balancing his acting endeavors, Asghari also took on various roles, including working as a waiter and running his fitness business, Asghari Fitness.
Despite these advantages, the Iranian-American model and actor faced skepticism from casting agents who often typecast him as "a cheesy trainer" linked to a pop star. "They'd say, 'Oh, and he's associated with a pop star, which is equally cheesy,' or 'can we see him as a character beyond that?'" Asghari recounted the criticism.
When the couple announced their separation, Asghari posted a heartfelt message on Instagram. "AFTER 6 YEARS OF LOVE AND COMMITMENT TO EACH OTHER, MY WIFE AND I HAVE DECIDED TO END OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER," he wrote. "WE WILL CHERISH THE LOVE AND RESPECT WE HAVE FOR EACH OTHER AND I WISH HER THE BEST ALWAYS." He also implored fans to be compassionate and considerate during this difficult time.
In a more recent interview with People magazine, Asghari reiterated his kind sentiments towards Spears. "It was a gift to share life with someone for such a substantial period. People grow apart and move on," he mused. The aspiring actor emphasized the importance of maintaining respect and kindness, even after a relationship has ended. "I've always despised people who, after a breakup, speak ill of their former partner. I refuse to do that because I had nothing but an incredible experience and a wonderful life with her. That will forever be a cherished chapter in my life," he concluded.
