Sean Baker Thanks Take That After Historic Oscars Win

Sean Baker stands as one of the dual filmmaking geniuses to have garnered four prestigious Academy Awards in a single glittering ceremony, the other being the legendary Walt Disney, a feat accomplished decades ago in 1953. Yet, Baker distinguishes himself as the sole auteur to have clinched all four Oscars for an ensemble effort in a single film—a remarkable achievement bestowed upon "Anora," the heartwarming romantic-dramedy starring the enchanting Mikey Madison, which dominated the awards show on Sunday evening.

"Anora" beautifully incorporates Take That's 2008 anthem "Greatest Day" twice, first in the titillating opening strip club sequence that sets the tone, and again in a poignant montage depicting the protagonist Ani (played by the Best Actress winner, Mikey Madison) eloping with her fabulously wealthy yet elusive Russian lover Ivan (portrayed by Mark Eydelshteyn). As "Anora" racked up accolades, the song echoed through the Dolby Theater, serving as a constant reminder of its pivotal role. A avid music enthusiast, Baker has openly confessed his admiration for the band Ride, but during his numerous acceptance speeches, he reserved a special acknowledgment for Take That, expressing his heartfelt gratitude in a post-ceremony interview. "I owe everything to them," he gushed about the beloved British boy band. "I am deeply indebted for allowing us to utilize their magnificent track, 'Greatest Day.' It seamlessly fits into the tapestry of the film."

Earlier in January, Baker extended his thanks to Take That on their home turf while receiving the Best International Independent Film award at the British Indie Film Awards. He enthusiastically exclaimed, "I wish to personally thank Take That for granting us permission to use their magnificent composition… I firmly believe it's the reason we're standing on this stage tonight." Intriguingly, Baker's first face-to-face encounter with Take That's frontman Gary Barlow occurred just last month. During a red carpet interview at the BAFTAs, where Take That performed "Greatest Day" in honor of "Anora," Baker raved, "What an incredibly delightful and genuine person he is."
