The trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs has hit a temporary pause amidst the ongoing federal proceedings for sex trafficking and racketeering charges in New York City. On June 18, Judge Arun Subramanian announced a delay in the hearing due to the sudden illness of a juror. "We have a juror who is unwell and experiencing vertigo. They were en route but had to turn back due to their condition, as informed by their partner," Judge Subramanian communicated to the court, according to NBC News. "Their absence, being a regular member of the jury, necessitates the postponement of today's session."
Vertigo, characterized by persistent dizziness and potentially indicating more severe health concerns, can also lead to nausea, vomiting, hearing loss, and mobility challenges, as explained by the Cleveland Clinic. Following this announcement, Judge Subramanian adjourned the court and rescheduled it to resume at 9 a.m. on June 20.
This delay comes on the heels of another juror being dismissed by the judge just a few days ago. On June 16, a 41-year-old Black male juror was removed from the panel of 12 due to inconsistencies regarding his residence—whether he resided within the Southern District of New York or with his girlfriend in New Jersey. Concerns about his candor arose a couple of days prior to his dismissal. Combs' legal team vigorously protested this removal, arguing that it compromised the rapper's right to a fair trial.
"The dismissal of this juror will significantly prejudice Mr. Combs," the defense stated in a June 15 appeal letter to the judge. "Given the absence of factual grounds for his removal, under Fazio, the court lacks the discretion to make such a decision." Furthermore, the defense requested a mistrial should the juror be removed. However, their appeal was denied.
Combs' trial, which commenced last month, sees him facing five criminal charges: one count of racketeering, two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and two counts of transportation for the purpose of prostitution. The 55-year-old music mogul has pleaded not guilty to all accusations.
