Shakira Makes Rare Comment About "Darkest Moment" of Gerard Piqué Breakup

Published: May 25 2026

Shakira, the talented artist behind the hit song "Whenever, Wherever," is unafraid to discuss her breakup from Gerard Piqué at any moment or place. Despite their 11-year relationship and two children together—Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11—the pair decided to part ways in 2022. In an interview with The Times published on May 22, Shakira, 49, candidly shared that she was navigating "the darkest moment—when I saw the dissolution of my family," referring to "the family that I had dreamt to keep forever."

During this challenging time, the Grammy winner was also supporting her father, who suffered a severe fall shortly after flying to Barcelona to be by her side following the split. Despite the pain, Shakira (born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) believes it has made her wiser and stronger. "They say that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and it is true," she explained. "It's amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can rely on at any moment in our lives."

She further added, "Sometimes through hardships and pain, we discover how strong we can be. Suffering sometimes makes you a better person, making you value friends and support." Chris Martin and Adele were among those who extended their support, with Chris sending a photo of a broken vase glued together with gold, with the message, "Kintsugi—you’re going to be so much stronger once this is over."

Reflecting on life, Shakira said, "Life can be a b--ch at times, but it's also beautiful and made of light and shadows." She expressed gratitude for every moment, the bright and the dark, and for those who have taught her valuable lessons.

Looking back at her ex-partner four years after their breakup, she said, "I will always have gratitude in my heart for the father of my kids and for turning me into the mother I am today."

As for her love life, Shakira shared that she's currently focusing on her children and career. "No romance for me for now. My plate is quite full," she said. "My kids are my priority, and so is my career. Strangely enough, I'm in love with my career like I've never been in my life. I'm enjoying my time alone as well."
