Shaun White and Nina Dobrev End Their Engagement, Split After 5 Years

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev are parting ways, taking separate paths in life. The champion snowboarder, 39, and the star of *The Vampire Diaries*, 36, have called off their engagement and ended their five-year relationship, PEOPLE can exclusively confirm.

A source close to the couple revealed, "It was a mutual decision, and it wasn't an easy one to make. But it was made with love and a profound respect for each other." Representatives for both White and Dobrev did not respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

The last time White and Dobrev were photographed together was on August 31, 2025, in Los Angeles, where they were seen holding hands while running errands. However, on September 7, Dobrev walked the red carpet at the premiere of *Eternity* at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival without her 5-carat diamond engagement ring. She also unpinned her engagement post, which had been prominently displayed at the top of her Instagram feed since White proposed in October 2024.

The pair first crossed paths briefly at an awards show in 2012, but it wasn't until 2019 that they truly connected. They were both booked as speakers at an event in Florida organized by motivational speaker Tony Robbins. Recalling a dinner that followed the event, the three-time Olympic gold medalist told PEOPLE in January 2022 that he "actually didn't know anything about [Dobrev]" at the time. But he found it amusing when several staff members flocked to her for photos. "And I was like, 'What's happening? What's going on?' It was actually really funny," he remembered with a chuckle.

The couple began dating in 2019 and moved in together at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. White made their relationship Instagram-official in May 2020, sharing a series of snapshots of Dobrev giving him a quarantine haircut. That time spent together forged a deep bond, White told PEOPLE. "Nina has just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me," he shared. "During the pandemic, she was a lifesaver—she really made that time in my life special."

Throughout their romance, the athlete and the *Degrassi* alum were red-carpet regulars and frequently offered glimpses into their life together on social media—from exotic vacations to nights out at Coachella. In 2022, Dobrev was by White's side as he competed in his fifth and final Winter Olympics in Beijing, an experience he later described as "emotional" and "overwhelming."

Ahead of the event, White teased the possibility of an engagement to Dobrev while chatting with PEOPLE at the Oasis Celsius Vibe House. "We're just enjoying our time together right now. No pressure," he said. "But I told her, I was like, 'Look, after the Olympics, I finally got my freedom to do whatever. And let's just have fun and be together and support each other.'" "But you never know. We'll see what happens," he added with a hint of mystery.

White proposed to Dobrev in October 2024 during a surprise dinner at The Golden Swan in New York City. He masterfully orchestrated the proposal by telling her they were heading to a CFDA/Vogue event hosted by Anna Wintour, only to pop the question with a 5-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring. At the time, the couple shared photos of the special night, with White writing on Instagram, "She said YES." "RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé," Dobrev wrote in her post.
