Tatyana Ali's reflections on her experience working on the 1999 comedy, "Jawbreaker," are tinged with a mix of emotions. On Saturday, Ali revealed on Instagram that she endured bullying on the film's set, while also highlighting how her co-star, Rose McGowan, stood up for her.
"Here are some snapshots from 'Jawbreaker' (1999). I was the lone high school student amidst the cast during filming, and I faced some bullying from a particular actress on set," Ali captioned a series of three photos. She elaborated, "But on one particular day, she tried it in front of everyone... and @rosemcgowan stepped in and told her to shut up, right in front of everyone! For that, I will forever be grateful to her!"
In response, McGowan commented, "I'd do it again," accompanied by heart emojis, and described Ali as an embodiment of "dignity, brains, and beauty" for eternity.
This iconic teen flick follows a trio of friends who accidentally kill their best friend and struggle to cover up the incident. Written and directed by Darren Stein, "Jawbreaker" also stars Rebecca Gayheart, Julie Benz, and Judy Greer alongside Ali and McGowan. Despite having a budget of $3.5 million, it grossed only $3.1 million at the box office over 25 years ago.
In 2017, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that E! was developing a scripted TV series adaptation of "Jawbreaker," with Stein on board to pen the script. However, the series, which was set to unfold in Beverly Hills and revolve around a new clique who commit an accidental murder at a bachelorette party, never saw the light of day.
