The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Be 7 Episodes And Won’t Cover The Full Game

The eagerly awaited Season 2 of "The Last of Us" is on the horizon, yet it marks neither the conclusion of the series nor the encapsulation of the entire sequel it's adapting. In a revealing interview with Deadline, fascinating insights were shed on the upcoming season's seven-episode arc, the likelihood of a third and even fourth season, and how the showrunners intend to craft its narrative.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Will Be 7 Episodes And Won’t Cover The Full Game 1

The sequel, "The Last of Us Part II," is an expansive game, to the extent that showrunners Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann recognized the necessity of spanning its intricate storyline across multiple seasons. Mazin explained, "The story content derived from Part II of the game surpasses that of the first game, necessitating from the outset a strategic approach to narrating it across seasons. In plotting out our plan, natural breakpoints emerged, and for this season, the national breakpoint seemed aptly placed after seven episodes."

Despite Season 2's slightly shorter run compared to Season 1, rumors abound that one episode will be particularly lengthy. Furthermore, the showrunners teased that a potential Season 3 could be significantly more ambitious in scope. However, Mazin remains cautious, acknowledging that even two seasons might not suffice to tell the entire story, as they intend to take their time and do it justice. He hinted, "Indeed, the story might even require a Season 4."

While HBO has yet to officially renew "The Last of Us" for a third or fourth season, Mazin remains confident that it will happen, contingent upon viewer enthusiasm. For those concerned that Season 2 might rush through the events of Part II, it seems you can breathe a sigh of relief. We eagerly await the reveal of where the narrative will pause when Season 2 premiers in 2025.
