FX has officially greenlit a Ryan Murphy-produced series inspired by Bret Easton Ellis' novel, "The Shards," marking a significant addition to its lineup. This dramatic venture, now under the wing of Disney-owned FX, embarked on its development journey in May with Kaia Gerber slated to shine in the leading role. She will be accompanied by a stellar ensemble, including Igby Rigney (renowned for "The Midnight Club"), Homer Gere, and Graham Campbell.

Ellis initially unveiled "The Shards" as a serialized audiobook through his podcast, captivating audiences from 2020 to 2021, before a printed edition followed suit in early 2023. Prior to FX's acquisition, another series adaptation of the novel was in the works at HBO but unfortunately did not progress beyond the development phase. Enter Ryan Murphy, who, as reported by "The Hollywood Reporter" in February, initiated conversations with Ellis to bring this captivating project to life under his Ryan Murphy Television banner, housed at 20th Television (which will also serve as the producer for the FX show).

Set against the backdrop of the early 1980s, "The Shards" weaves in autobiographical threads from Ellis' life, revolving around Bret (played by Rigney), a student at an exclusive Los Angeles preparatory school. Bret's world is turned upside down with the arrival of an enigmatic newcomer, Robert Mallory (portrayed by Gere), who coincides with the reign of terror unleashed by a serial killer. Campbell, who graced Broadway with his performance in "Appropriate," will step into the shoes of Thom Wright, one of Bret's closest confidants.

While "The Shards" has received the go-ahead from FX, it is still in search of a scriptwriter to pen its compelling narrative. Murphy and Ellis will executive produce alongside Max Winkler (who will also helm the direction), Nick Hall, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young. Campbell is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Jackoway Austen.

This promising adaptation promises to delve deep into the intricate web of Ellis' story, delivering a visually stunning and emotionally charged journey through the 1980s elite school setting.
