Victoria Beckham had a clear vision of what she truly desired—what she yearned for with every fiber of her being. As the former Spice Girl revealed in her new Netflix documentary, *Victoria Beckham*, her ambition was to be recognized more for her fashion designs than for her days with the iconic girl group. Yet, this decision seemed to strike a discordant note with her fellow bandmate, Melanie “Mel B” Brown.
“One of the girls actually said something to me, and it did rattle me a bit not too long ago,” Victoria, known as Posh Spice during her Spice Girls tenure, reminisced in the second episode of the docuseries. “It was Melanie B who remarked, ‘Don’t forget where you’ve come from.’” But as the 51-year-old fashion mogul clarified, “I’ve never lost sight of my roots. I’ve never, ever forgotten that Posh Spice paved the way for me to be where I am today. She might have been a bit grumpy, but deep down, she was actually great.”
For Victoria, while her stint as Posh Spice held immense significance, it was during the Spice Girls’ 2008 reunion tour that she realized her true passion lay elsewhere. “It was wonderful to celebrate the Spice Girls legacy, but it was on that tour that I understood I didn’t belong on stage anymore,” Victoria confessed. “It had been thrilling, but it wasn’t what ignited my soul.”
In a fascinating twist, it was her fellow Spice Girls—Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, and Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm—who urged her to pursue her dreams. “The Spice Girls were always the ones who encouraged me, saying, ‘Don’t hold back,’” Victoria recounted. “I adored fashion, and I yearned to be part of the fashion industry. It was time to embark on something entirely different.”
However, the transition was far from seamless. Victoria was perceived as a pop star and a WAG (Wife and Girlfriend of a sports star) due to her marriage to soccer legend David Beckham, with whom she shares children Brooklyn Beckham, 26, Romeo Beckman, 23, Cruz Beckham, 20, and Harper Beckham, 14. “The industry can be a bit elitist,” Victoria admitted. “I knew that to embark on this new chapter, I had to transform. I had to shed those other personas.”
To that end, Victoria took what she believed were the necessary steps to be taken more seriously. “I simplified myself, embraced a more elegant version of who I am. And then I dove into work.”
Today, Victoria stands as a titan in the fashion world. Yet, her bond with the Spice Girls remains unbroken, with Geri (Ginger Spice), Emma (Baby Spice), and Mel C (Sporty Spice) joining her for the London premiere of the Netflix series on October 8, a testament to their enduring friendship and mutual support.
