Why Louis Tomlinson Says He Will "Never Really Accept" Liam Payne's Death

One year after the tragic loss of his One Direction bandmate, Louis Tomlinson continues to grapple with the unfathomable grief that still grips his heart. In an interview with The Independent, published on October 18th, Louis, who had lost both his mother and sister in 2016 and 2019 respectively, admitted, "Naively, I thought at this point, I'd be a bit more seasoned in dealing with grief than my peers. I thought that might make a difference, but it hasn't."

Why Louis Tomlinson Says He Will

The singer of "Back to You" reflected on the passing of Liam Payne, who fell from a third-floor balcony in Argentina in October 2024. "It's something I'll never really accept," he said, his voice heavy with emotion.

Back in 2010, Liam and Louis joined forces with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan to form one of the most successful groups of all time. Despite the group taking an indefinite hiatus in 2016, Louis emphasized that Liam was always there for him, no matter what. "This is not a comment aimed at the other boys—but I know if it was me, I would have struggled with that idea. There would have been a feeling of inferiority because you're the guest. But any opportunity Liam got like that, he was always there for me," Louis explained, his eyes filled with memories of their time together.

Even when Liam may have been struggling himself, he put others first and still showed up. "Those moments are a true testament to the essence of who he was as a person," Louis added.

The "Perfect" singer also recently opened up about Liam's legacy, noting the profound impact he had on Louis and their group as a whole. "I could go on and on about how amazing he was, but I think we all looked up to him," he said during his appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast earlier this month. "I don't think we would have been brave enough to say it at that age when I was in the band. I think I would have had too much pride, but we all looked up to him massively."
