Better Call Saul – Season 6 Episode 1

The opening sequence of "Better Call Saul's" new season six sets the tone with a stunning display, following the tradition of its predecessor by starting in the future. However, the events we witness unfurl much earlier in time. It's a nostalgic throwback to the formidable persona Jimmy, a.k.a. Goodman, had forged in "Breaking Bad." The camera glides through Jimmy's house, drenched in a classic opera symphony, revealing the excesses and extravagance of his life as Goodman.

The scene then seamlessly transitions into "Wine and Roses," picking up from where Season 5 left off. Nacho runs northward with relentless determination, seeking refuge from Mike after allowing the assassins to penetrate Lalo's compound. Lalo, who had instructed one of the assassins to inform his employer of his demise, visits the servants' house on his compound. He eliminates them to avoid witnesses and uses one of them as a decoy to serve as proof of his death.

Saul and Kim embark on their new life together. While Kim sifts through her pro bono cases and grapples with the horrors of the shootout Goodman was involved in the previous season, Saul visits the courthouse to meet with the detectives investigating Lalo's case. Jorge de Guzman's alias is beginning to crumble under their scrutiny, and he tells them Lalo will show up when legally required—a nervous energy that only Odenkirk can bring out so well.

Juan Bolsa informs Gus of Lalo's death, and he consults with Mike, both convinced that it is true. Whether Gus is fully convinced is a question for future episodes. They also engage in an intense discussion about whether or not Nacho deserves to be left in the lurch after what he did for Gus. Gus is undecided, but Mike has made up his mind: he cannot let this happen after Werner's fate. We also catch a glimpse of the cousins visiting Lalo's house, and from their reaction, it seems no one will stand in their way.

Jimmy and Kim discuss their plans for Howard. They want to sabotage him but not in a way that completely destroys him; they still want to secure the settlement money. Their plan is halted midway at the country club where Howard is playing golf when Kevin, Kim's former employer (remember Mesa Verde and the logo controversy?), spots Saul and stops him. Saul turns the situation to his advantage, as he often does, and figures out a way to plant cocaine in Howard's locker. Clifford Main, who is playing alongside him, notices the packet and looks at him curiously, dare I say, with a sniff of doubt.

As Lalo slips unnoticed into a vehicle bound for the US border, he reaches out to his uncle Hector with a call. Hector's heart leaps with a mix of joy and confusion upon hearing Lalo's voice—it's a testament to the uncertainty of their last communication that he didn't know Lalo was still alive. Hector is appalled to learn of Gus' betrayal and his role in the shootout that nearly claimed Lalo's life. When Hector demands proof of Gus' involvement, Lalo initially shakes his head, saying he doesn't have it, but a memory flickers in his mind like a candle flame. He pauses, then nods decisively, saying he will retrieve it. Turning to the men at his side, he demands his money back, but they don't listen. Lalo's hand snakes out, swift and deadly, as he dispatches them with a cold efficiency. He then sets off on his quest for the proof, his resolve as unwavering as the trail of smoke from the just-extinguished conflict.
