Published: Jan 09 2025

The highly anticipated second season of the Max original series "Bookie" bursts onto the scene with its thrilling opener titled "Mahnanga." The adrenaline-pumping opening sequence sets the pace for the entire season, as we embark on Danny Colavito's (portrayed by Sebastian Maniscalco) harrowing high-speed escapade. Danny, clocking a dangerous 109 mph in a 65 mph zone, finds himself pulled over by Officer Wilkes (played by Eric Allan Kramer). Drenched and disheveled from a recent pool mishap, Danny instantly draws the officer's suspicion, prompting a battery of field sobriety tests. Although Danny passes these tests with ease, he still receives a ticket for speeding at 80 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Bookie – Season 2 Episode 1 1

The tension mounts as Officer Wilkes insists on inspecting the trunk, uncovering Danny's cash-laden business dealings. In a clever twist, Danny recognizes Wilkes as a militia member and exploits this connection to his advantage, offering a bribe to overlook the money but not the speeding violation.

Elsewhere, at the hospital, Ray/Rayfield's Grandma (played by Arnetia Walker) is convinced that she and John Franklin/Frank (portrayed by Brent Jennings) are being punished for their repeated infidelities. Their theological dispute is abruptly interrupted by a call from 307 (played by Eric Lopez), who feigns an injury to stall a payment. Ray, not easily deceived, orchestrates a confrontation at a gas station.

The plot deepens further as Lorraine Colavito (played by Vanessa Ferlito) and Hector (portrayed by Jorge Garcia) anxiously await news at the hospital. Ray informs them of Frank's survival and Danny's mission to Modesto to bring back Sandra (played by Andrea Anders) and Anthony (played by Maxim Swinton). Danny's attempt to persuade Sandra to return meets with stubborn resistance, as she revels in her newfound sense of tranquility. Adding fuel to the fire, Anthony announces that Danny's car is being towed. Sandra, with her persuasive prowess, convinces the tow truck driver (played by Dennis Cockrum) to release the car in exchange for a substantial fee of $1,200.

As the Colavito family sets off on their journey home, Frank stirs in the hospital, uttering the enigmatic word "Mahnanga." The bizarre incidents continue the next morning when Wendy (played by Dale Dickey) not only moves in with Danny and Sandra but also attempts to place a bet on the Sacramento Kings, much to Sandra's dismay.

The day veers into the realm of the surreal when Danny and Ray encounter Walt Dinty, Rob Corddry's vividly portrayed character, who presents an unusual Botox deal. Deep in Walt's pocket is a dermatologist owed a favor, and rather than cash, he opts for Botox as repayment, with Sandra readily agreeing to a 50/50 partnership to peddle it in her retail haven.

Grandma's frustration with Frank's incessant chanting of "Mahnanga" boils over like a kettle at its peak, prompting Hector and Lorraine to offer their helping hands. Grandma, sharp as a tack, swiftly decodes Lorraine's connection to Ray and issues a stark warning about the impending repercussions.

The episode peaks with a harrowing debt-collection mission at Brad Garrett's abode, portrayed none other than by Brad Garrett himself. Ray's patience snaps like a twig as Brad mocks him for bringing his baby along, escalating into a physical confrontation that concludes with Brad sprawled on the floor, flat as a pancake.

"Mahnanga" marks an exhilarating opener for "Bookie" Season 2, a rollercoaster ride through high-octane car chases, family melodramas, and the shadowy depths of the sports betting underworld. The characters are fleshed out with rich detail, and the plot twists and turns, leaving viewers on tenterhooks, eagerly anticipating the next chapter. With a harmonious blend of humor, suspense, and character-centric storytelling, "Bookie" continues to weave a gripping saga that keeps audiences glued to their seats, hearts pounding and minds racing.
