The third episode of Brilliant Minds season 2 commences with a scene of a middle-aged woman named Gloria, gasping for breath at the subway station. As she overheats, she suddenly collapses onto the tracks, mere moments before a hooded figure, Adam, rushes over to try and save her. However, the camera's framing leaves it ambiguous whether he pushed her or not. Thankfully, first responders arrive and manage to pull Gloria to safety, albeit in a precarious state.
Katie, fearless as ever, jumps down onto the still-electrified tracks, risking her own life to bring our patient to the ER, where Wolf's team is waiting to oversee the proceedings. Meanwhile, Ericka continues to pop pills while Dana is shocked by her girlfriend's reckless act.
As Gloria is rushed into surgery, we learn more about Adam's background. He is a severely autistic individual and the prime suspect in the case. He has been agitated since the accident, and Gloria is his caregiver. Being non-verbal makes it difficult for them to communicate, but Dr. Wolf is determined to try and help him.
To understand what Adam is feeling, Dr. Marcus steps forward as their resident empath. He realizes that Adam just needs the world to quiet down and places headphones on him. In doing so, Adam shouts out one word: "Saya." This is complicated further by the fact that Adam and Gloria had a significant fight a week ago about Adam moving into a new apartment and away from the group home.
With a pen in hand, Adam continues to shout his codeword while also drawing what looks like a butterfly. The police arrive and arrest Adam, given his status as the prime suspect.
In his absence, Dr. Wolf realizes that Adam was actually saying "say ahh," which becomes the key to helping Gloria. Wolf claims that Gloria needs steroids to help her and we soon learn that she actually has Lupus (a nod to Dr. House).
The group narrowly missed the mark, but Adam's butterfly is a match to Gloria's rash, which flares up with intensifying symptoms. The encounter was a mere coincidence, given that Gloria is now set to be his full-time guardian, and he'll be living with her. Fortunately, with Gloria awake and in her right mind, her statement suffices to release Adam from police custody. As the episode draws to a close, Ericka is poised to unveil the truth about her pill popping, but her grand speech has the opposite effect. Dana confesses that she is the one who reported Carol, claiming she "has her reasons" and has no regrets about it.
Meanwhile, Wolf throws a warm welcome party for Carol Pierce in the rec room, where everyone is in high spirits...except Dana. There are further upheavals in the hospital management when we discover the new Chief - it's Josh Nicholls! This revelation also explains why he has been avoiding Wolf all along.
