The ninth episode of "Dexter: Original Sin" kicks off with an unsettling scene featuring Brian, who inadvertently encounters yet another victim – none other than Barbara, the woman from the adoption agency. As Harry and Maria arrive on the scene, Maria discreetly pulls her colleague aside to confront him with the file he had seized from Tampa. It's during this tense confrontation that Harry unburdens himself, at least partially, about his illicit connection with Laura.
Through a series of haunting flashbacks, Harry confesses his affair to Spencer, who, in response, strips him of his badge. Despite this, Spencer agrees to continue the search for Laura down by the docks, where they suspect one of the shipping containers holds her captive.
After several arduous days of searching, they finally uncover the boys, but the grim reality dawns upon them: everyone else, including Laura, has been brutally murdered and dismembered. This heart-wrenching discovery shatters Brian, who witnesses the horrors while Harry swiftly secures Dexter's safety first.
Harry's preference for Dexter over Brian becomes starkly evident, and it's clear that we're only scratching the surface of this complex family dynamic. Eventually, Brian succumbs to his psychotic breakdown, attempting to choke Deb while she's vulnerable in her cot. His descent into madness continues as he smashes his fist through a window, leading to his eventual removal from Dexter's presence.
Determined to uncover the hidden truths, Maria storms the archives, sifting through Moser's history with a fine-tooth comb. Unfortunately, her search yields no incriminating evidence. Unbeknownst to her, the archivist is secretly aiding Harry by concealing the damning details.
Back at the station, Dexter's razor-sharp instincts zero in on Spencer, whom he knows to be far from innocent despite his masterful portrayal as a grieving father. In a bid to extract answers, Dexter breaks into Spencer's bachelor pad. With Harry arriving unexpectedly with Spencer, Dexter finds himself in a precarious position. After a tense standoff, he narrowly escapes detection by slipping out the window.
The following day, a blood donation drivecommences at the workplace, and Harry entrusts Dexter with the mission of accompanying Deb. Deb begins to savor the finer aspects of life, to the extent that Tanya even expresses a hint of disappointment that another "formidable female" isn't part of their team.
As twist of fate would dictate, Dexter finds himself in the situation of needing to extract blood from Spencer. He deliberately roughens his handling when removing the needle and realizes that the man's poker face remains unmarred, quite unlike Clark, who appears incredibly agitated and anxious due to the fear of potentially having HIV. Clark confides in Dexter about his concerns, and Dexter readily agrees to draw blood for him instead.
Concurrently, Harry delves into old photographs from various crime scenes and realizes Brian's presence among the crowds. It appears that Brian has returned to survey these scenes multiple times and, alarmingly, now has his sights set on Dexter.
As Harry inches closer to uncovering the truth, Dexter too edges closer to realizing it. He provokes Spencer into walking into his trap. After grappling with him and tying him up, the two engage in a frank conversation, shedding their guards. Spencer confesses that his sole motive for all his actions is to seek revenge against his ex-wife.
Regrettably, Dexter commits a grave error: after slicing off Spencer's finger, he leaves him to bleed out on the table, having also inadvertently loosened the cling film restraining him. Spencer promptly frees himself and escapes. However, Dexter had anticipated this scenario and watches as Spencer speeds away, deciding to pursue him to locate Nicky.
As for Brian, he wields a chainsaw against Barb, the adoption agency worker whom he earlier took hostage. Harboring a deep grudge after being separated from his brother, he decides that it's time for her to pay the price.
