Meanwhile, Harrison endeavors to forge ahead with his life. Employed at the Empire Hotel and having successfully obtained his GED, he thrives amidst his coworkers and gains the favor of the patrons. However, haunting flashbacks of murdering his father continue to haunt him, posing a constant threat to his newfound stability. It becomes evident that Harrison cannot evade his past or his innate instincts so easily. Whether he likes it or not, Dexter's guidance will likely be necessary sooner than later.

At the hotel, Harrison crosses paths with Shauna, a recent arrival from Iowa. One fateful night, she finds herself incapacitated and barely coherent, while a sleazy individual named Ryan Foster pretends to be her spouse to isolate her. Sensing the wrongness of the situation, Harrison discovers Foster's sinister plot to drug her. Without hesitation, Harrison acts decisively, ending Foster's life. Realizing the gravity of his actions, he scrambles to clean up the mess, utilizing every tip Dexter ever imparted to him in disposing of the body. Initially, it seems as though his efforts have paid off... but perhaps not for long.

The sanitation workers, while sorting through the trash at the dock, inadvertently uncover dismembered body parts slipping from the black bags. Horrified, they swiftly alert the authorities. Officers Wallace and Oliva arrive on the scene to investigate. Wallace, incensed by the workers' incompetence, searches diligently and discovers additional body fragments, his attention drawn to the distinctive way the bags were tied – a testament to Dexter's meticulous methods.

Meanwhile, Dexter has risen from his bed, albeit still not quite ready to walk unassisted. An officer arrives, bearing a letter from Angela, its enclosed photograph featuring a telling caption on the reverse: "We're square. Now, beat it out of Iron Lake." Dexter, eager to set off in pursuit of Harrison, declines to press charges against Angela. Little does he know the extent of his son's peril.

Intriguingly, Angel appears on the scene, reminiscing about his past with Deb and Dexter's exile to Iron Lake, far from the hustle and bustle of Miami. However, the conversation soon takes a dark turn as Angel delves into the heart of the matter. Maria and Angela had both been convinced that Dexter was the Bay Harbour Butcher, unaware that it was actually Doakes all along. Despite rescinding Dexter's death certificate, Angel's intentions are far from benevolent; he harbors deep distrust and seeks to pin the murders on him. Dexter, astute to Angel's machinations, realizes that his days may be numbered.

Upon learning of the dismembered body in New York, a chilling realization dawns upon Dexter—Harrison could be behind it. The deceased, a sleazy businessman and serial sex offender, fits the profile of someone who would warrant "the code." Driven by this revelation, Dexter stealthily exits the clinic, evading Batista's watchful eyes, and sets his course for New York. There, he locates Harrison and prepares for a confrontation, the weight of his past and present colliding in this pivotal moment.
