As they swiftly depart with their illicit spoils, it becomes evident that Ray and Manny are far from legitimate law enforcement officers. Their scheme is meticulously crafted, yet whispers of their infamous exploits seem to be gaining traction. Nevertheless, on this particular day, Ray's birthday, their successful heist serves as an unparalleled gift wrapped in criminal glory.

Ray shares a deep, unbreakable bond with his adoptive mother, Theresa Bowers, who finds herself entangled in financial woes, desperately in need of ten thousand dollars. This predicament perhaps sheds light on Ray's relentless pursuit of wealth, yet even amidst her struggles, Theresa manages to provide him with a simple cupcake to celebrate his special day.

Ray and Manny have honed their operation with military precision, adopting the moniker "hunters." They adhere to a strict moral code, preying solely on weak dealers, rationalizing their actions with the phrase, "Just enough to keep our heads above water for a couple of months." Their professionalism is unparalleled, meticulously preparing for each heist long before they set foot inside their targets' dwellings.

Swift and proficient, the duo ensures they retain the element of surprise, eradicating any chance of being etched in the victims' memories. Their objective: to dismantle these dealers one by one, all while silently padding their own coffers. This line of work, however, is fraught with peril, especially when an alluring, potentially lucrative target outside the city presents itself, thanks to Ray's former acquaintance, Rick. Theresa's pressing financial needs, potentially exacerbated by her health, make this deal an irresistible prospect for Ray. As for Manny, in the midst of welcoming his girlfriend Sherry into his home, he gently reminds Ray that this is merely a side gig for him.

Delving deeper, we uncover Ray's battle as a recovering alcoholic, who attends an AA meeting that very evening, baring his soul about his ongoing struggle to stay sober. His heartfelt confession is seamlessly intertwined with a gripping scene in Philadelphia, where Ray meticulously staking out the house Rick has enticed them to rob. The decision looms heavy on Ray's shoulders, torn between caution and temptation.

Ultimately succumbing to his urges that fateful night, Ray succumbs to temptation, indulging in alcohol and tobacco in the sanctuary of his apartment. Flashbacks surface, painting a picture of Ray's tumultuous past with Marlette, a girl who was tragically killed in a car accident, her memory honored by a roadside tribute.

Returning to the present, Ray, Manny, and Rick reluctantly agree to strike the house. However, disaster strikes almost immediately as Rick opens fire, killing one dealer and sparking a chaotic gun battle. In the crossfire, all three dealers and Rick fall, the latter bleeding out amidst the kitchen's carnage. With flames licking the walls, Ray is determined to salvage something from the inferno, desperate to leave with the money. He uncovers a stash beneath an upstairs bed, but Mina, one of the dealers wounded earlier, manages to escape in the confusion.

With the premises poised to erupt into flames at any moment, Manny and Ray expedite the process by igniting the acetone-soaked area and making a hasty retreat. Alas, in their rush, they inadvertently leave behind their radio, which is promptly scooped up by another vehicle speeding down the same road they had narrowly escaped. A gravelly voice emerges from the receiver, presenting Ray with an ultimatum. They could either abandon the money and narcotics by the roadside and walk away from the whole mess, or face dire consequences that could ultimately cost them their lives. Without hesitation, the duo opts to flee for their lives.

Later revelations unfold that Mina, having narrowly survived her harrowing experience at the house, now lies in a hospital bed awaiting surgery. In a weakened state, she scrawls a desperate plea: "If I survive, please don't betray me. Someone else was privy to our deal." She reveals that the trio who assaulted her wore badges, unwittingly igniting a war. It transpires that Mina is actually an undercover DEA agent, which explains her awareness of their fake law enforcement identities. She implores her colleagues to maintain her cover for the time being, as the situation teeters on a precipice of uncertainty.
