The episode kicks off with Colonel Patrick Quinn (portrayed by Denis Leary) meticulously preparing for his press conference, poised to declare his assumption of emergency command over USAG Baumholder. However, before making the announcement, he engages in a crucial meeting with General Davidson (Joe Morton), who informs him of a surprise twist: his new posting is actually at USAG Stroopsdorf, nestled 90 minutes away in the Netherlands. Davidson then proceeds to tauntingly reveal the reasons behind Quinn's reassignment.

Going Dutch – Season 1 Episode 1 1

Upon arriving at Stroopsdorf, Quinn and his Executive Officer, Major Abraham Shah (Danny Pudi), are astounded to discover a base that resembles more of a bowling alley than a military installation. Quinn's astonishment only escalates when he encounters a soldier sporting shoulder-length hair, prompting him to vow to transform Stroopsdorf into a genuine combat base and secure his return to Baumholder.

It isn't until Quinn crosses paths with Sergeant Dana Conway (Laci Mosley) that he fully comprehends the magnitude of the challenge ahead. Not only is the base accessible to the Dutch public, but it has garnered a reputation for catering to bases in Germany and Belgium with cheese, laundry services, and bowling alleys.

Quinn's shock reaches new heights when he instructs Private Anthony 'BA' Chapman (Dempsey Bryk) to escort him to the base commander, only to find himself face-to-face with Captain Maggie Quinn (Taylor Misiak), his own daughter. Matters don't improve as Quinn and Maggie retire to the Teen Center for a more confidential discussion. When Quinn reveals that being stationed here with her is his punishment, Maggie is reminded of the very reasons she severed ties with him two years ago.

The conversation between Quinn and Maggie grows so heated that Shah is compelled to intervene. Quinn confides in Shah that he had hoped to keep his military and personal issues with Maggie separate, but Shah insists that now, more than ever, the military must be involved. As proof, Shah inquires if Maggie has any reservations about her father commanding Stroopsdorf. She admits she does and reveals that she has spent the past ten months orchestrating a mission so crucial that its failure could destabilize the base. When Shah asks about the nature of this mission, Maggie reveals they are marching in the Tulip Festival the following day. Quinn dismisses it as a joke, but before he can respond further, Maggie warns him that his attempts to fix what isn't broken will only lead to the base's downfall. When Quinn requests Maggie to demonstrate one redeeming aspect of the base, she leads him to the dining facility. Shah readily acknowledges that the meal served at Stoopsdorf ranks among the finest he has ever tasted, whereas Quinn, burdened by pride, remains tight-lipped despite the obvious delight etched across his face with each bite. Following their gourmet experience, Quinn addresses his troops for the inaugural time, introducing himself and outlining his mission. To emphasize his seriousness, he promptly initiates a rigorous session of physical training. Corporal Elias Papadakis (Hal Cumpston) struggles immensely with the drills, prompting Quinn to make the entire platoon stand by until Papadakis completes the tire cross. The group finds themselves lingering until the wee hours of the morning, until Maggie steps forward and assumes the blame for their lack of physical fitness, asserting that her focus had been elsewhere.

The subsequent morning, before venturing out to the Tulip Festival, Quinn pays a visit to Supply Sergeant Conway, who is tasked with provisioning the lavish lifestyle indulged by the soldiers at Stoopsdorf. It doesn't escape his notice that she has been flagrantly misappropriating military funds. Instead of愤怒, he extends her an invitation to join Team Shiny.

Maggiebriefs Quinn on the rich tapestry of the festival, even furnishing him with index cards for the march. However, pride gets the better of her, and she scoffs, tossing them into the trash. Despite the absence of the cards, Quinn's speech progresses smoothly until the bowling segment of the parade emerges. In a moment that mortifies him, his unit, and insults the nation, Shah rescues him from further embarrassment by silently unplugging the microphone at the podium.

Later that evening, Quinn tracks Maggie down in town, offering not only an apology but also a spot on Team Shiny. To his astonishment, she not only declines but also dismisses him curtly. This rejection does not sit well with him. Despite this, he calls her shortly after leaving, inquiring why she chose to follow in his footsteps if she harbors such intense dislike towards him. She reveals her aspiration to serve, potentially in the Senate and maybe even as President one day. As their conversation ebbs and flows, Quinn is overcome with emotion, teetering on the brink of tears. This vulnerability prompts Maggie to view him in a new light. After a brief exchange of teasing remarks, she agrees to co-manage the base alongside him. This marked the virtually conclusive scene of the episode.
