The episode kicks off a month prior to Gravesend, where Cece Brewer (Jayden Bartels) and her circle of friends eagerly delve into their summer aspirations. Excitement fills the air, enveloping everyone except Cece, until her companions remind her of her impending participation in one of the world's most prestigious Debate Camps. However, moments later, her Debate Coach (Luke Smith) delivers a devastating blow—Cece hasn't been accepted into Gravesend's Debate Camp.
Switching to the present, Cece finds herself listening to her mother's well-wishes for her alumni interview with Kathryn Bosco (Mariette Booth). This heartfelt moment is abruptly cut short by Anthony Brewer (David Schwimmer), who apologizes profusely for being unable to chauffeur her to the interview due to a SYN-related issue. Forced into a corner, Cece reluctantly shares a harsh reality with Devin, following an attack by the oily substance that had previously assailed Trey. Though Trey remains in a coma-like slumber for much of the episode, he receives an unsettling and enigmatic visitor. Determined to uncover answers, Cece, Frankie, and Devin set their sights on the fort.
Elsewhere, Jen (Ana Ortiz) attempts once again to coax Alex (Francesca Noel) into discussing Trey's car while dropping her off at Community Service. However, her efforts fall flat, as Alex dashes out of the car upon seeing Cece approach. Cece's forgiveness remains elusive, though she softens slightly when Alex returns her Kombucha cup.
Devin Brewer (Sam McCarthy) visits Frankie (Galilea La Salvia) in the hospital, where she is keeping vigil at Trey's bedside. Their brief conversation about Trey's plight is interrupted by guilt-ridden silence on Frankie's part, as she admits she doesn't know why she's there. Devin reassures her that any man would cherish her presence. Their conversation is abruptly halted by a doctor, who ushers them out.
After they leave, the doctor offers words of encouragement to Trey, promising him that this chapter will soon be closed. Meanwhile, Anthony awaits Jen's arrival outside the hospital. With some persuasion, he convinces her to let him accompany her when she questions Trey. The same doctor who had just spoken to Trey is present when Jen and Anthony arrive. Before her suspicions about Anthony begin to rise and she sends them away, she warns Jen that Trey's recovery could take days, weeks, months, or even years.
After exiting Trey's room, Anthony pretends to need to use the restroom and sneaks back in with the mysterious substance. To his disappointment, Trey remains unresponsive. Outside, the substance guides him to the fake doctor who had pretended to be caring for Trey.
At the outset, Cece briefly encounters her café buddies while pausing to refill her Kombucha cup, unknowingly containing thesame infectious substance that had affected Trey. Inspired by her friend's remarkable achievement, Cece hastily departs for her interview. Upon reaching her destination, she has already consumed the entire cup of Kombucha. During the interview, Cece's nose starts to bleed a dark, oily substance, which Kathryn mistakenly assumes to be blood. As Kathryn rushes to seek assistance, Cece abruptly leaves the interview and finds herself at her mother's residence, where she vomits the oily substance.
Elsewhere, Frankie and Devin are admiring the vending machine's offerings at the hospital when Alex interrupts them, inquiring about Trey. However, their conversation is cut short when Devin dashes off upon receiving a call from Cece. Meanwhile, Alex continues his search for Trey at the hospital when CJ (Elijah M. Cooper) arrives with complimentary food from a nearby restaurant.
Before Devin and Frankie can reach Cece, the substance she had puked up earlier comes back to life and starts growing, this time transforming into a blob rather than vine-like tendrils. The blob pursues Cece all the way to the elevator, where she briefly gains respite until the elevator halts. Panic-stricken, she slumps into the elevator's corner. Just in time, Devin and Frankie arrive to open the elevator doors, allowing Cece to escape as the elevator collapses beneath the blob's immense weight.
Later, in the subway, Cece and Devin confide in each other about their deepest secrets, including Anthony's possible involvement in the bizarre events and Cece's disappointment about not being selected for Debate Camp. Devin finds solace in the fact that Cece is as chaotic as he is. Their heartfelt conversation abruptly ends as the subway train arrives at the station. Unfortunately, the blob reappears and continues chasing Cece through the train and along the tracks until it encounters an exposed high-voltage wire, causing it to explode into countless small black rocks.
Simultaneously, Trey awakens from his coma but seems to recall little except being outside Devin's house with Frankie. Meanwhile, Devin, Frankie, and Cece hail a taxi to the fort, where they arrive just moments before spotting Anthony clad in a hazmat suit.
