In the fifth episode of "Hijack," the passengers begin to turn on one another as they grapple with the situation at hand. They discuss their options, debating whether to confront Sam and the driver. Meanwhile, Jess, seemingly unaffected by the chaos, leaves the carriage alone and begins rummaging through her bag. Sam, noticing this, pushes Otto, causing the train to lurch. This movement causes a remote control to slip out of Jess' bag, which only strengthens their suspicion that she is part of the assassins and that they need to retrieve the detonator from her.

As the passengers band together and stage a rebellion, they're confident that Sam doesn't have a weapon. They seize their chance and tackle him to the ground as the lights flicker out momentarily. When Sam regains consciousness, he's tied to a pole and his pockets are searched. They find the keys and head over to the driver's cab to release Otto. With the passengers now in control, Otto has no choice but to stop the train.
However, Sam quickly points out that if they step off the train, the bombs will detonate. The most skeptical onboard do get a chance to sneak a peek of the explosives wired underneath and realize the threat is real. It's here that Sam finally admits that he's not in control and is being forced into compliance with orders. Sam insists that he can get everybody out of this mess, and Jess is watching and listening to every word. Mei actually believes Sam's story, especially in light of Freddie's death.
The seriousness of this situation is finally unveiled when they learn that there are eight bombs in total, two under each carriage. In the midst of this revelation, the other passengers also hear that there's an unscheduled stop coming up. When they find out about John Bailey-Brown and how they're all collateral and need to stay on the train, they're not particularly happy but do get moving again all the same.
Meanwhile, Zahra brought Daniel to the station for an interview with Stuart. He had promised extra provisions, privileges, and even a potentially shorter sentence. Dan wanted answers. Well, it seemed like Stuart wasn't involved in this scheme as he talked about how the initial plan was for him to die on the plane. Given that he survived, it went against their initial plans, and his role was over. The long and short of it? Stuart knew nothing.
Detective Beck updated Ada and the others on the bomb situation. He headed to the pub, The Foxhole, and asked around for information. He learned that Sam had shown up around 7 the previous evening and was talking to another British man.
The investigation also continued with Olivia showing up to see Faber. He was more convinced than ever that Sam wasn't behind this and was determined to find evidence to prove that. The project with Bailey-Brown had been kept under wraps all this time, with the CCTV footage deleted. Faber had personally oversaw the whole thing, but there could be someone else who knew all of this too.
Elsewhere, the assassins disposed of Daniel's goon in the boot of their car and ignored Daniel's call on the man's phone. Marsha spied the assassins leaving and immediately grew suspicious. When they passed her outside, they needed to make sure she didn't know anything, so the pair staged an "accident" so they could get into her cabin.
Meanwhile, the USB flash drive found its way into the hands of the worried mother back home. Unfortunately, there was more drama on the train when the passengers realized Jess was cradling her bag tightly. They initially thought she was holding onto a phone... until they wrestled it from her and found the detonator. The whole ruckus, including the train stopping, armed the bomb. As a result, Bailey-Brown was diverted away from the station, and the plan was aborted by the authorities.
At this point, we learned that Jess had to reset the timer every 1 15 minutes; otherwise, the bombs would detonate. She eventually gave over the codes, but they ran out of time while inputting the digits. The rear carriage was armed and looked set to detonate. Sam scrambled to organize traffic, forcing everybody forward out of the last carriage. Unfortunately, one of the older women, Petra, passed out and was caught in the blast.
