I, Jack Wright – Season 1 Episode 2 1

Elsewhere, John (Daniel Rigby) and Georgia Wright (Zoe Tapper) find themselves grappling with the reality that Jack's will, contrary to their expectations, had undergone significant alterations. Georgia speculates that Jack's intentions mirrored his perception of John, but the pressing concern lies in their next course of action. She urges John to challenge the will, amidst Gray's (John Simm) eavesdropping on Bella's (Sabrina Bartlett) confidential conversation with her mother. Bella confesses her frustration, hinting at Gray's inebriation, while Gray interruptions with an exuberant demeanor, boasting about his elation post-yesterday's turn of events.

Sally confides in Daisy (Eden Hollingsworth) and Josh (Samuel Small) about Jack's surprising will, evoking Josh's curiosity about Jack's motives. Sally, uncertain herself, posits that Jack might have been grappling with unseen mental health struggles, emphasizing that the will reflects Jack's internal turmoil rather than their deserts. She vows to uncover the truth and rectify the situation. Meanwhile, Gray deceives Bella about his bequest, reassuring her it suffices for their happiness, despite Bella's skepticism fueled by online rumors of discord. Gray dismisses them as fabrications and vows to turn Bella into a star.

Bobby Botham (James Fleet) delves into unorthodox cancer treatments, while in an adjacent room, Rose (Gemma Jones) discusses Jack's will with Emily (Ruby Ashbourne Serkis), marveling at its unusual nature though unable to fathom Jack's rationale. Emily, preparing to return to London, finds herself overcome with emotion as she steps into her car. DCI Morgan visits Jack's workplace, seeking insights into his character from Annie Rouse (Niamh Cusack), who extols Jack's remarkable qualities. Discovering Jack's diary and intending to seize his desktop, DCI Morgan encounters Annie's skepticism about the intrusiveness, given Jack's suicide. Morgan corrects her, asserting that Jack was murdered. Annie promptly contacts John, urging him to call back.

Sally reassures Daisy that Joseph will fetch her if the situation becomes overwhelming, suggesting that Josh might benefit from camaraderie and routine. Emily engages in a video call with Kyle (Callum Adams), sharing the will revelations. The prospect of gaining control of the company looms, yet she wavers in her decision. Kyle reminds her of their jointly nurtured business over the past three years, questioning whether she's prepared to stay in a declining city and country.

Emily gently reminds Kyle of his American residence, but her words strike a chord of irritation in him, prompting him to abruptly end the call. Elsewhere, Gray engages in a candid conversation with Dempsey (played by Anthony Adjekum), exploring the feasibility of contesting the will. Dempsey delves into the nuances, highlighting that a challenge can ensue if the distribution is deemed unfair—a scenario termed 'failing to make reasonable provision.' Additionally, Dempsey reveals that his salary failed to materialize last week, to which Gray casually attributes to a payroll system hack, assuring he's addressing it.

Ruby (Scarlett Courtney) interrupts Gray's thoughts by informing him of a persistent debtor awaiting outside. In a panic, Gray dashes out through a side exit. DCI Morgan convenes the team, focusing their efforts on tracing Asha Bell, the daughter from Jack's second marriage, believed deceased since 2014 according to records. Morgan outlines plausible motives for Jack's murder and assigns tasks: DC Bertie Wu (Leej Ramirez) to peruse Jack's journal, DC Sam Carver (Lena Kaur) to scrutinize the late Mrs. Wright, and DC Kat Jones (Liz Kingsman) to verify alibis.

Gray seeks Bobby's insight into the unfolding events before confronting Rose, lambasting her for allowing the situation to escalate. He vows to confront John and proceed with challenging the will, prompting Rose to inquire about his spending intentions. Gray snaps at her, accusing her of influencing Jack against him. Rose retaliates by stating he needed no encouragement in that regard.

Sally consults Max Preston (James Wilby) regarding Jack's will, and he wonders if Jack had other relationships. Sally denies this, and Max suggests Josh should contest the lack of reasonable provisions, noting Sally's prenuptial agreement. Sally ponders Jack's mental state, suspecting dementia.

Emily meets Reuben Maguire (Percelle Ascott), sharing details about the shares totaling 15 million. She probes Reuben's influence on Jack, hoping for a positive outcome despite the upcoming changes feeling unusual. Reuben reassures her, and their affection deepens into a passionate kiss, leading to intimate moments in the garage.

Max quizzes Sally about the autopsy's findings, hinting at overlooked aspects. Sally recognizes the focus was solely on Jack's fatal wound, aware that proving diminished capacity could invalidate the will. Max outlines potential steps, including a second autopsy, which Sally dismisses as impractical due to Jack's recent burial.

Emily and Reuben relax, discussing the impending turmoil. Kat interviews Rose for an alibi regarding Jack's demise, a process repeated with others. Emily visits John at the office, still reeling from shock. John finds murder more palpable than suicide, reminding her of their ongoing acquisition. Emily expresses admiration for John, insisting she was unaware of Jack's intentions. She suggests John as the ideal candidate to lead the company and mentions a potential Financial Conduct Authority investigation into KKG's valuation algorithm issues.

Once Kat has departed, John promptly dials to inquire about their standing at KKG. Kat, meanwhile, engages in a conversation with DCI Morgan about the alibis, who informs her that he's headed straight to the solicitor's office. Morgan then proceeds to question Laura Johnston (Rakhee Thakrar) regarding her encounters with Jack. Her role was to ascertain his mental competency and caution him about any factors that might trigger legal disputes. Laura harbors suspicions that she was actually hired to shield the new will from Jack's wife. Jack once mentioned John when he reallocated his company shares, saying, "He'll eventually appreciate my actions." Laura also reveals the existence of a prenuptial agreement, which she intends to retrieve.

Gray approaches John to deliberate on challenging the will. John expresses concerns that it might deprive his mother and daughter of their finances. Gray dismisses the idea of taking money from charities, insisting that Jack owed them all. Persuaded, John agrees to ponder over it. When John asks Gray about his whereabouts on the night of Jack's demise, John reveals he was at home with his wife, whereas Gray admits to being out. Gray inquiries if John has ever laid eyes on the previous will, to which John responds negatively.

Bobby discusses with Rose a potentially costly treatment option, urging her to inform her family. Rose entrusts Bobby with this task, prompting him to immediately call Emily and apprise her of Rose's health status. Spotting Eddie Elliot (Mark Frost) outside his office, Gray instructs the cab driver to take him elsewhere. Bobby alerts Gray about Rose, and shortly thereafter, Sally receives the same update. Gray, who's with Sally, urges her to visit their mother at the earliest. Their discussion shifts to the case, with Gray asserting that his brother is fully supportive. Sally expresses a need to contemplate, reminding Gray that Jack had taken care of him financially in the previous will. Though Sally can't recall the specifics, she insists that Jack left Gray more than sufficient.

Kat converses with Mary Robbins (Victoria Broom) about Jack's visitors. Mary reveals that Gray and his father haven't spoken in ages. Kat inquiries about Jack's activities at the place of his discovery. Mary explains that he was attending to his pigeons, a nightly ritual that anyone familiar with him would recognize.

Gray confides in Bella about his mother and secretly transfers 10,000 pounds from her account to his. He takes the money to Eddie, pleading for patience. Eddie slaps him in the face as punishment and agrees to accept it as a late payment penalty. Unyielding, Eddie insists that the debt remains 50k and grants Gray a week to settle it.

Reuben engages Emily in a conversation about whether he needs an alibi, offering her his assistance whenever needed. Gray catches them kissing and snaps a photo of Reuben's car as he drives away, noticing suspicious-looking bloodied clothes or something concealed in a bag. Max informs Sally that an autopsy would be crucial to proceed with the dementia plan, necessitating Jack's exhumation. Sally concurs without hesitation. Later, Reuben disposes of the clothes.

During an interrogation, Emily wonders aloud about the kind of woman who would attempt to exhume her husband. Gray dismisses it as an overreaction.
