This then brings us back to 11 hours prior to the murder. Eleanor is running her own company, Rescue and Relief. Nancy messages her and wants to meet. It’s Mary’s birthday, and naturally, the trio are having drinks together. Nancy is guarded though, especially when she receives a message that’s rattled her.

Alone, Nancy brings up to Ellie how she’s been having an affair behind her husband, Robert’s, back. Ellie tells her to call it off as it’s clearly not liberating her. In the middle of the night, Robert rings Eleanor and wakes her up. Nancy hasn’t come home and he’s worried. Ellie immediately gets up and messages Nancy, obviously covering up the affair for the time being.

Eventually, Eleanor decides to get dressed and heads over to see Robert, pleading with him not to get the police involved just yet. She’s currently over at Jordan’s place, who happens to be her employee that she’s been sleeping with. She hurriedly gets dressed and heads over to see Robert.

Robert and Nancy live in a really big, expensive house, and it doesn’t take long for Ellie to open up and eventually tells him about the affair. Her affair partner is a guy called David and apparently she met him through work. Nancy does a lot of philanthropic work while she’s at home, sitting on the board of several different organizations.

Details are sketchy though but we do learn that Robert has given up drinking two weeks ago. He did it for Nancy, but that seems like it’s gone out the window now.

The police soon arrived at the house, informing them of a shocking discovery: Nancy's body had been found in Arroyo Seco Park, with her identification found in a wallet. The evidence suggested that she had been assaulted, and they needed someone to identify the body. To their surprise, Eleanor chose to go instead of Robert.

In the present, Ellie was released from police custody, although the detectives didn't believe she was unaware of Nancy's affair. Ellie immediately went to see Mary and her husband, Howard, to share the news about Nancy's death and the condition of the body. It seemed that she had been struck from behind.

Mary was not pleased when she learned that Ellie had kept the affair from her for several weeks, while Ellie dismissed it as not being a big deal. However, Nancy's death quickly made headlines, and Cora was overwhelmed by her mother's passing. She was in shock and numb, prompting Ellie to play the role of a firefighter.

While talking with Ellie, Cora mentioned how she didn't feel safe around Robert, hinting at his anger issues. Downstairs, Robert was with his sister, who wanted to set up a bounty and use their family's wealth to push for answers.

Robert had no alibi for that night, making him a suspect. Ellie didn't think it was a good idea for her to stay longer than necessary and headed to work after receiving a message from Jordan. An awkward conversation at work ensued, and this is precisely why you shouldn't sleep with someone you work with - especially when the dynamic is as fragile as it is at Rescue and Relief.

The funeral ceremony proceeds, and Mary relapses into smoking once again. She takes another shot at Howard, who has been diligently caring for the children and wishes to shield them from their grief. Ellie eventually steps forward to offer a few words before she and Mary retreat to reflect on the memorial. Ellie's gaze is fixed on a man in a denim jacket at the church, who seems to be a suspicious character. She wonders if someone from Nancy's family might have shown up here.

In the midst of this, breaking news hits as the detectives have found a man named Davide Haji Boyette, also known as D.H. Boyette. Apparently, he was one of Nancy's patrons on her website and was a skilled painter. Furthermore, Nancy had one of D.H. Boyette's paintings on the wall. It appears that the person in the painting is Nancy herself, painted while she was naked. Robert is angered and smashes up the painting outside.

David rambles on, pointing out how Nancy was never truly his. Ellie brings up how Davide is black and that she was Nancy's only black friend, so she would have mentioned it due to their shared skin color. Mary steers the conversation towards how David is an angry person and that he never really showed Ellie that side of him because of their "connection." Nancy had confided in Mary about something significant, but we don't see what it is right now.

Robert gets dressed up and decides to attend the ballet that night as a way to try and feel the warmth of his deceased wife. He invites Ellie to go with him, and while she initially refuses, she soon changes her tact and decides to join him. The pair is photographed together, where a man mentions how "the boss' daughter cleans up real nice."
