Robot expertly repairs the device designed to annihilate the Sequids, and Mark, with decisive action, detonates it in proximity to the corrupted astronaut. This decisive maneuver proves victorious, as the Guardians triumph over the Sequid body snatchers. Grateful but ruthless, the Martians express their thanks while demanding the execution of Shapesmith, whom they wish to sentence to death. The Guardians steadfastly refuse, prompting Mark to demonstrate his formidable strength and aerial prowess in space, enabling their dramatic escape. Eve warmly embraces Mark, yet the mood is tinged with underlying tension. Similarly, Robot and Monster's relationship remains strained.

Debbie once again declines Cecil's offer of assistance regarding Nolan's son. The Guardians grapple with the profound loss of Kate and the grievous injuries sustained by Rex and Rae. Debbie names the rapidly growing baby Oliver. Mark and Amber attempt to reconnect, albeit with a palpable distance growing between them. Will's former lover, Rick, reappears, stirring Donald's turmoil over his reconstructed existence.

Rex and Mark share intimate confessions, with Rex revealing the struggles between Mark and Amber to Eve. Debbie hires a nanny to assist with her new responsibilities. Cecil, offering Eve Kate's position in the Guardians, receives a polite but firm refusal. Amber seeks Eve out, eager to discuss her troubles with Mark. Conversely, Mark visits Art, seeking guidance on his strained relationship with Amber. Their conversations unexpectedly converge. Art presents Mark with Nolan's old sci-fi novels, which Nolan himself narrates, revealing they are chronicles of his actual life adventures.

Allen the Alien descends upon Earth to confer with Mark, updating each other on Thaedus, the rebel Viltrumite, and Nolan, who, despite his captivity, left behind clues in his books to defeat the Viltrumites. Haunted by guilt over Amber's loneliness, Mark reluctantly remains behind. Nolan, confined in a space prison, steadfastly refuses the Viltrumite General's entreaty to rejoin their conquest. Meanwhile, the corrupted astronaut returns to his apartment, where Shapesmith had been hiding. The astronaut regurgitates a Sequid, which promptly takes control of him once more. In the poignant epilogue, Angstrom Levy resumes his cosmic voyage, traversing the boundaries between universes.
