The eighth episode of "Law and the City" kicks off with the dramatic arrest of Hee-ji's father, Kim Myeong-ho. Hee-ji's mother reveals that he had been facing a lawsuit and has now been apprehended on fraud charges, though she remains confident that it's all a mere miscommunication. Hee-ji, desperate to see her father, attempts to visit him at the precinct but is turned away as he refuses to grant her an audience. Flashbacks haunt her as she recalls the last time her father suffered a financial setback.
Elsewhere, Sang-gi continues his mentorship with the interns and Kim Hyung-min. The Managing Partner, Ryu-jin, urges Hyung-min to refrain from distracting Sang-gi from his work commitments, only to be taken aback when she learns that he is actually enjoying imparting his knowledge to the novices. In parallel, Chang-won receives the disheartening news of his defeat in the voice phishing case, leaving his client, Do Mi-gyeong, with a substantial fine looming over her head.
Hee-ji enters the workplace, determined, and reads through the meticulously crafted complaint against her father, accusing him of investment fraud. Driven by resolve, she returns to the police station, asserting her identity not as Myeong-ho's daughter but as his legal representative. This time, her father agrees to meet with her. Hee-ji shrewdly points out the irony of being accused of the same scheme that he himself had once fallen prey to, yet Myeong-ho stands firm in his contention that the entire situation is a colossal misunderstanding.
Yu-deok later informs Chang-won of Hee-ji's visit to the police station, sparking concern. At home, Hee-ji broaches the subject with her mother, expressing her desire to represent her father in court, only to be met with an unwavering refusal. Undeterred, she seeks out Ju-hyeong, asking his firm to officially take on the case while she silently handles all the substantive legal work behind the scenes.
A poignant flashback transports us to a charity event where Myeong-ho, accompanied by a woman named Choi Seong-mi, enthusiastically pitches cryptocurrency investments to a gathering of women. The scene cuts to a contentious confrontation where the same women confront Myeong-ho, accusing him of squandering their hard-earned money. In his defense, he claims innocence, shifting the blame entirely onto Choi Seong-mi.
Chang-won, displaying a compassionate side, checks in on Hee-ji, who updates him on Ju-hyeong's assistance in the case. Meanwhile, Mi-gyeong pays him a visit, facing the grim reality of prison labor if she cannot settle her fine. Moved by her plight, Chang-won generously offers to foot the bill himself, but she proudly declines his gesture.
As the day drew to a close, Ju-hyeong imparted to Hee-ji that uncovering personal details about her family might be inevitable if he were to take on her case. However, Hee-ji reassured him that she had no objections. Subsequently, Ju-hyeong paid a visit to Myeong-ho, painting a vastly different picture of the charity event this time around, with no mention of cryptocurrency. Myeong-ho revealed that he had lent Seong-mi a sum of 900 million won in cash, which she had since repaid. As proof, he presented Ju-hyeong with an IOU bearing his seal.
Back in the office lounge, Hee-ji recounted the recent developments, prompting the team to unite and lend their support. Mun-jeong encountered Choi Seong-mi, also incarcerated, who placed the entirety of the blame squarely on Myeong-ho's shoulders. Seong-mi revealed that she and Myeong-ho had attempted to launch a crypto business in 2019, the year he fell victim to a scam. Chang-won unearthed an old contract between the two, dating back to that period.
The group scrutinized the evidence, forcing Ju-hyeong into the uncomfortable position of informing Hee-ji that the evidence seemed to implicate her father. The following day, in court, Ju-hyeong and Chang-won lodged an objection to the admission of the contract as evidence.
Later, Myeong-ho made it clear to Ju-hyeong that he did not want Hee-ji present during the hearings. In a subsequent conversation with Ju-hyeong, Hee-ji shared that after her father was scammed, he had closed down the business but kept the company registration active. When he decided to revive his venture, he utilized the same company framework for his relaunch.
As the dinner gathering continued, Hee-ji abruptly realized she had overlooked sending an essential item to one of her clients and hastily excused herself to attend to the matter. Soon after, Sang-gi appeared at her office, seamlessly taking charge and urging her to concentrate solely on her father’s legal case. Upon her return to the group, Mun-jeong proposed a meeting with the so-called “victims.” Despite Hee-ji’s earnest pleas, the two women adhered steadfastly to their fabricated narrative.
During the subsequent hearing, Ju-hyeong grilled Seong-mi, querying how she could have signed a contract with Myeong-ho in 2019 when his business had already shuttered its doors. He then levelled accusations against her, claiming she duped the victims into paying Myeong-ho the 900 million won she owed him and that she had stolen his IOU seal to forge the contract. Chang-won then interrogated one of the victims, who eventually cracked under pressure and confessed that Seong-mi had orchestrated the entire scheme, instructing them to frame Myeong-ho if they ever hoped to recoup their losses.
Ultimately, Seong-mi was handed a seven-year prison sentence, while Myeong-ho was exonerated and joyfully reunited with his family. In celebration, Hee-ji treated her friends to lunch, during which they revealed that they had already been privy to her and Ju-hyeong’s romantic relationship.
Later, Ji-seok arrived with a basket of fruit for Hee-ji and delicately broached the subject of maternity leave. Seeking guidance, she consulted her managing partner, Na Gyeong-min, who seemed hesitant to discuss the matter despite it being a legal entitlement, as he had never before granted such leave to an employee.
