Episode 1 of "Maamla Legal Hai" commences with a narrative of stories rooted in the genuine incidents that unfold within the Patparganj District Court in Delhi. The episode commences as the peons transfer a witness box from one courtroom to another due to a dearth of resources. A case is underway where the victim is being interrogated by the prosecutor. The victim asserts that five men attacked and robbed him.

Enter Advocate VD Tyagi, the defense attorney, who arrives in the courtroom and employs his wit to turn the case on its head. Tyagi argues that since it was five men who attacked the victim, the case filed is groundless. He asserts that the police must file a dacoit (robbery) case against the five individuals since "robbery" does not apply. The judge sides with Tyagi's argument, and the five assailants are released, albeit temporarily.
Meanwhile, Ananya Shroff, a freshly graduated lawyer from Harvard, visits the Patparganj Court to commence her legal practice. As she navigates towards the admin office, she observes the conditions faced by lawyers there. Lawyers are setting up tables wherever they can find space, and the court is brimming with them. Ananya meets **Vishwas Pandey**, the court admin, and learns that acquiring her own office in the court is nearly impossible. Vishwas informs Ananya that if she requires her own chamber, she would have to pay an exorbitant fee to the court. He adds that a chamber would eventually be granted to her based on merit or seniority.
Ananya is disheartened and agrees to have Vishwas set up a table for her outside the court, similar to the numerous other lawyers she encountered on her way in. Outside, **Advocate Sujata Negi** meets a client seeking to file for divorce. The client asserts that he was upset because his bride was not shy on their wedding night. Sujata refers the case to a different lawyer, making a small commission from the referral.
On the other hand, Advocate VD Tyagi is filling out the nomination form for the upcoming Patparganj Bar Association elections, where he aims to become the president of the Bar. Tyagi informs his assistant, Mintu, that his ultimate goal is not to become a judge but an Attorney General. Tyagi reveals that he is going to obtain a recommendation from famous Supreme Court advocate J.B. Wadia to participate in the elections that can make him the President of the Bar Association.**
This vivid portrayal captures the essence of the episode while infusing it with a more expressive and engaging tone, enhancing the reader's understanding of the situation and characters involved.
At the same time, Sujata encounters a seasoned advocate in the canteen and pleads with him to assist her in securing a chamber, given her status as a senior lawyer. She confides in Advocate Munshi about her frustration with being paid meager fees while lawyers with chambers rake in lakhs of rupees for every case.
Tyagi arrives at a reputable hotel to meet Advocate Wadia but is struck by the man's fluent English and his use of complex words like 'preposterous,' 'outrageous,' and 'egregious.' At Patparganj Court, Vishwas secures Ananya a desk outside the court, just like other lawyers, including Sujata. Vishwas places Ananya's desk right next to Sujata's.
During their initial interaction, Ananya and Sujata clash over the practice of illegally referring cases to lawyers with chambers for a commission. Sujata is offended and refuses to let Ananya sit beside her. Consequently, Ananya is forced to set up a table for herself in the parking lot, where she struggles to attract clients.
On the other hand, Tyagi decides to write an article about one of Wadia's recent losses to gain his favor. He enlists the help of his assistants to write the article but is unimpressed by their English writing skills. Just then, Ananya bursts into Tyagi's office, requesting his assistance. Her fluency in English impresses him, and he asks her to write an article on the same case. In return, he promises to help Ananya secure a desk in the court's foyer. The article impresses Tyagi, but Sujata expresses her hurt that Tyagi allowed Ananya to get a desk in the foyer. Tyagi promises to give Sujata her chamber if he wins the upcoming President of the Bar Association elections.
At the foyer, Ananya is shocked to learn that Tyagi had published the article she wrote as his own and published it in the newspaper. She confronts Tyagi in his office, upset by the deception. Tyagi argues that she was given a table in the foyer in exchange for the article, as the court only provides tables to lawyers based on seniority or merit, neither of which she possessed. She decides to vacate the desk and begins trying to attract clients by standing outside the court like other rookie lawyers.
Meanwhile, Tyagi impresses Wadia at a party by discussing the article Ananya had written for him. He secures Wadia's letter of approval, which will allow him to stand in the upcoming elections. The next day, Sujata stands up for Ananya in front of the other rookie lawyers. Ananya realizes that the Patparganj court operates solely on connections and connections. She decides to team up with Sujata.
The episode concludes with Tyagi learning that he will be competing against his arch-nemesis, Advocate Phorey, in the upcoming Bar Association elections.
