Episode 1 of "Marshals" begins amidst the chaos of a warzone. As a phone rings, Kayce Dutton haphazardly grabs it from the ground and anxiously questions where his wife, Monica, is. Suddenly, a deafening explosion rocks the air, jolting Kayce from his reverie.

Kayce is currently stationed on the picturesque Yellowstone Ranch, specifically in the small East Camp section that serves as his family's ranch. The rest of the vast Yellowstone land has been given to the local Broken Rock reservation. Kayce's life here is not without challenges, as he shares this space with his son, Tate, who is still grappling with the loss of his mother.
As Tate departs for an upcoming protest, Kayce is confronted by his friend Calvin, who questions his solitary lifestyle. The two used to serve together in the SEALS, and Calvin's approach to life couldn't be more different from Kayce's. They engage in a brief shooting session and a tree-blowing spree, discussing their diverging paths. Calvin reveals that he's leading a US Marshals task force and has come to Yellowstone to hunt for two fugitives.
He tries to sell the perks of his job, even offering Kayce a spot to join him. Calvin's group includes Andrea, Miles, and Belle, and they all set out on horseback to track down the suspects. It doesn't take long before they find their prey, but it's Kayce who takes the lead in a reckless pursuit of one of the fugitives. He skillfully outmaneuvered the guy, avoiding gunfire and using the wilderness to his advantage.
Kayce is joined by Belle, a skilled rider and former undercover agent with the ATF who joined their ranks several months prior. Andrea, on the other hand, has joined the Marshals to avenge her father's death and isn't afraid to stand up to anyone. She doesn't care who she得罪, and to prove her point, she tampers with the jukebox to incite the locals.
In the morning, as Kayce and his team temporarily assume their roles as US Marshals during the ongoing hunt, they head to a protest site. The indigenous people here are holding signs that read "No mining on stolen land," protesting against a planned mine in the distance that they fear will pollute their water supply and be the leading cause of death from cancer in friends and family members who have passed away.
Tate, whom we heard earlier was attending a rally, is now at this protest. Clutching a picture of Monica, he's enraged when Kayce shows up and tells him to stand down. Kayce knows there could be trouble brewing, but Tate ignores him, continuing to tell his father that he shouldn't be "waving the white flag" but instead championing real change and honoring Monica's memory.
In the midst of this, Kayce reassures the officials, including Chairman Rainwater and Mo, that he's just moonlighting and not officially working with the Marshals. At least, not yet. Secretary Clarkson is also present, giving a big speech that doesn't take long to be interrupted. A hooded figure from the treeline waits for the speech to begin before setting off an explosive. The blast hits Chairman Rainwater, who is hurriedly rushed to surgery, while the fugitive gets away.
With everyone scrambling for safety, Kayce drives Tate home. From here on, the episode turns into a standard procedural as the Marshal team works to gather evidence and track down the bomber. It seems to be a homemade explosive, and the serial number leads to an area near Broken Rock.
The facial recognition technology employed on footage from the rally has identified a local native from the reservation, Jim Kane, as the individual who dropped off the bag. He might be involved in this matter, and it's a solid enough lead for the group to pursue.
As for Kayce, he heads to the hospital to check on Rainwater, where he gets into a scuffle with a suspicious nurse who he follows into the bathroom. The nurse attacks Kayce with a knife, and our protagonist goes full Indiana Jones on the guy, shooting him dead.
Kayce grabs the man's phone and discovers a video game being used as a communication device. There's footage here of Kane's family being held at gunpoint. It's now clear that Kane was blackmailed into working with the bombers. He remains silent until Kayce promises to get his family back, knowing that blood is thicker than water.
After doing some research, the group learns that these extremists holding Kane's family wanted to kill Rainwater to try and discredit the reservation. This way, they could make Kane a patsy and the Chairman collateral damage. This would work perfectly for this anti-government, anti-globalism group.
The Marshals decide to use a tracker planted inside Kane's daughter's phone to figure out where they're being held, which brings them to a compound out in the wilderness. Late at night, the group prepares for their raid... but there's a problem.
The group has been waiting for them all this time and tries to ambush the Marshals. Kayce, Calvin, and the others make short work of everybody inside the house, but unfortunately, Kane's daughter is gone.
The tracker, embedded in the girl's shoe upstairs, sends Kayce into a frenzy as he begins to interrogate one of the injured individuals downstairs. Torturing and threatening the man with further pain, he finally forces a confession: the girl has been taken to a nearby lake. Owen Kilborn, a former US military man and the ringleader of this group, is revealed to be much more than they initially suspected. When Kayce and Calvin confront him, he holds the girl at gunpoint, but Kayce, a deadly accurate marksman, swiftly ends his life. "This stops nothing," the dying man gasps as Kayce manages to rescue the girl.
In the aftermath of this confrontation, it becomes clear that Kilborn had received $250,000 wired to him from an offshore account. It seems that the bombing was a mercenary job, hinting at something more sinister at play here. For now, the group celebrates their small victory.
Kayce delves deeper into Belle's horse-riding skills and discovers that she has a different surname than the one she's known by. The team knows her as Skinner, but in reality, she's from a nearby horse breeding family. Belle requests that this be kept from the team, and Kayce agrees to keep silent.
Calvin then gives Kayce a pep-talk about family and how their actions matter. We also see that Rainwater is on the mend. Back at home, Kayce takes Calvin's words to heart and speaks to Tate about their earlier argument. He apologizes for the pressure he's been putting on his son, explaining that the only reason he's so attached to the ranch is because it's all he has to offer Tate. However, Tate doesn't really want it.
Kayce knows that Tate needs to forge his own path in life. But with Kayce lost and a part of him dead with Monica, he recognizes that he needs to fight for the life he wants.
