As we ponder over the ostensibly contemporary world depicted in "Modern Family," it is prudent to recall that a quarter of a century ago, Cliff and Clair Huxtable both held their own careers with pride. This is not to advocate that every television family must now adhere to the two-income household model, but rather to point out that quaint, outdated notions about gender roles sometimes render "Modern Family" (MF) less empowering than a Bravo reality show like "The Real Housewives of Modern Times," so to speak. Hence, last night's episode, which zeroed in on the aspirations of the family's female members, was not only long overdue but also, albeit slightly disappointing, a step in the right direction.
The episode finds Claire contemplating a daring leap out of her stay-at-home-mom comfort zone, just as Gloria, whose hubby seemingly has no clue about her daily endeavors beyond gym visits (how ironic, considering her vocal prowess!), struggles to make her voice heard. With the men off on their quest to conquer their adversaries, Gloria seizes the golden opportunity to deliver the pep talk she has been yearning to give all evening. Ignoring the children, who undoubtedly could use some parental attention, Gloria and Claire indulge in a booze-infused heart-to-heart, where Gloria persuades a hesitant Claire to overcome her fear of defeat (and it's patently clear she stands to lose!) and run for public office. Gloria's encouragement ("I come from a lineage of resilient women, and I must confess, sometimes you scare me a wee bit") propels Claire towards becoming as tenacious a candidate as the puggles her opponent breeds.
Upon their triumphant return, Phil steps up to discipline Haley (bravo, Phil!), while Gloria proudly announces Claire's decision to run. As ever the helper, Gloria then uses her…assets (prompting giggles from Phil and Luke) to impress Jay's client. It is both sad and amusing that, while Claire embraces new challenges, Gloria's greatest leverage continues to reside in her cleavage.
