Episode 5 of Outlander Season 8 begins with Jamie and Claire tending to their beehives as Buck plays with Jem, Mandy, and Fanny. The Frasers are thrilled to have Buck around and share with him about the King’s Mountain battle. However, they agree not to reveal that they were responsible for his parents’ demise.

Just then, Aaron Whitaker, the father of the newborn twins, arrives. As a token of gratitude for saving his wife, Aaron has a warning for Jamie. During a hunt, he overheard Loyalists discussing Cunningham's plan to attack Jamie with his and Partland’s militia. They intend to deliver him to Commander Ferguson, who will then hang him.
In Savannah, Brianna is working on the portrait of Amaranthus and her son, Trevor. The constant sounds of war cannons are alarming, and William comforts Bree as she worries about Roger. They discuss Jamie, and Bree finally reveals that she can relate to William. Like him, she had a loving father and felt betrayed and unmoored upon learning of Jamie’s existence. But once she got to know Jamie, she overcame those feelings.
At the Ridge, Jamie, Buck, and Claire discuss strategy. They deduce that Cunningham and the Loyalist tenants plan to attack after the Lodge meeting since no weapons are allowed inside. Buck and Kezzie are tasked with keeping an eye out for Partland’s militia, while Josiah is sent to bring the “devil” as backup.
At the Continental camp outside Savannah, Roger trains with a sword. On the day of the battle, he writes a letter to Bree, explaining his decision to stay as he feels a sense of obligation to fight and protect. He can finally understand his father who must have felt the same during World War II. Roger feels for the young, nervous soldiers and approaches one, Cristophe, the army drummer, who looks quite scared. Roger reassures him that everything will be alright and they head to battle together.
Bree continues to panic as the sounds of fighting get closer to the city. William is curious about Roger and she claims that he is stuck at the Continental camp because he was ministering. As a precaution, John has left behind an American flag. Should the city fall, Bree will not be harmed. She is touched by the gesture.
Unfortunately, the battle rages on as the Continental army falls far short against the British cannons. In Roger's arms, a soldier's life fades away, and he discovers Cristophe, shot in the neck. Racing back to camp, Denzell, the doctor tending to him, is by his side. Cristophe begs Roger to pray for him before slipping into unconsciousness. As Roger returns, overwhelmed by his inability to save even one more life, a cannon blast brings him crashing down, igniting memories of falling into his father's arms.
It's the day of the Lodge meeting, and Josiah's absence leaves Claire worried. Jamie, like Cunningham, accepts his prophesied fate, believing he still has time left. The Ardsmuir men stand by his side, while Lizzie conceals a gun outside the Lodge. During the meeting, Cunningham tries to provoke Jamie but fails. A long closing prayer from an Ardsmuir man allows Jamie to slip out and seize the gun.
At home, Claire prepares her medical equipment as Elspeth arrives to keep her company, knowing of her son's schemes. Elspeth tries to clear her conscience by insisting that Cunningham doesn't want to kill Jamie. At the Lodge, Cunningham is irritated to see Jamie escape. As Jamie watches, Cunningham and the Loyalist tenants spill out of the Lodge in search of him. The Ardsmuir men are angered by the betrayal of so many tenants by Jamie.
That night, a storm brews, enabling Jamie's militia to take down the Loyalists and steal their weapons. Jamie confronts Cunningham in the emporium, and they engage in a fierce fight. Exasperated, Cunningham decides to kill Jamie after all when he gets his hands on a gun. However, Buck arrives and shoots Cunningham in the back.
The Savannah battle is over, but there's no word of Roger. Bree wants to personally check the camp, and William offers to accompany her. After bidding her goodnight, he encounters Amaranthus outside in the pavilion. He rambles about how time is short and how he loves the idea of marrying her and passing his title to their child. She finds it amusing and suggests sleeping together before considering it. But he insists on marriage as it's the right thing, and she accepts. They share a kiss and engage in a passionate tryst.
Back at the Ridge, the Ardsmuir men bring Cunningham to Claire. Elspeth is upset with Jamie, but Claire focuses her attention on his injury. While Fanny checks Jamie's wound, Claire operates on Cunningham, who may never walk again.
The next day, William takes Bree to the camp, where she has a tearful reunion with Roger. Cristophe is also alive and well. Denzell joins them, surprising them all with how connected they are. After seeing Roger and Bree off, Denzell and William decide to hang out together. They run into Ben, one of the Continental generals. Initially elated to see him, William hugs him before realizing the truth and punching Ben in response.
At the episode's end, Cleveland arrives as the "devil," amused that Jamie finally accepted his help and annoying Claire in the process.
