Episode 8 of Scarpetta unfolds with Marino revealing to the police that he was the one who heard a woman's screams and approached the house. He contends that the man blindsided him, forcing him to shoot to survive. Later, Scarpetta confronts Marino, stating that she never asked him to shoot the man or to lie for her. She acknowledges that she'll have to lie on the autopsy report. Marino counters that she had no legal reason to be at the house and would've faced severe consequences.

Present-day, as Marino is released from jail, Scarpetta tells him that he always goes too far. They discuss their shared experiences, both good and bad, and Marino suggests they simply drive away from all this mess. Scarpetta agrees, but then quickly changes the subject as Marino heads inside the house. Scarpetta then tracks Benton's phone location and discovers he's near the house.
Meanwhile, Lucy visits Fruge's place and they engage in sex. Afterwards, Lucy avoids kissing Fruge and tells her that she's a messed-up person and needs to leave. She doesn't show much remorse even when Fruge reveals she was suspended for letting Lucy accompany her in searching for Jinx Slater. Elsewhere, Maggie speaks with Dr. Reddy, and they argue about Scarpetta's theory regarding the serial killer.
In the past, everyone celebrated Scarpetta for her role in finding the killer, but she remains uncomfortable with the situation. Benton goes to look for Marino and learns he's being questioned by internal affairs. At home, Lucy discovers that someone from Scarpetta's office has been hacking her computer. As Scarpetta returns home, she breaks down in her room. Dorothy consoles her and assures her that she's done nothing wrong.
As the night progresses, Dorothy becomes increasingly frustrated with Marino's arrest and suggests they move into a hotel room that night. She also brings up Janet's observation that Marino is in love with Scarpetta. He denies it, but she confronts him further and tells him to choose between her and Scarpetta.
Scarpetta follows Benton's location to a truck sitting on the mansion's grounds. Benton reveals that this is where they held Jinx all this time. He's now being charged with Gwen's murder, and Benton advises Scarpetta to stay away from the Gwen and Cammie case.
Benton begins to reveal his twisted behaviors and his enjoyment of watching creatures suffer. Scarpetta tells him she's just as messed up and asks him to give her his worst. Instead, he tells her he wants a divorce.
A very drunk Lucy heads to her cabin and starts talking to AI Janet, admitting that Fruge makes her feel like there might be a life outside. However, AI Janet doesn't respond, and Lucy realizes the program isn't on her device anymore. She breaks down just as Dorothy enters the room. Dorothy suspects it might be Scarpetta who did it, but Scarpetta insists it wasn't her. Lucy yells at them both about never truly seeing her.
Marino's decision to leave Scarpetta for Dorothy stirs up a storm of emotions within Scarpetta. She desperately needs him for the investigation, especially since Dr. Kaminsky holds crucial information, but he chooses to accompany Dorothy to the hotel.
Scarpetta's past with Maggie is revealed in a dramatic confrontation where she accuses Maggie of hacking her system and fires her on the spot. Benton, who meets her later, questions the case's status. Instead of explaining, she leads him into a locked room and they engage in a passionate tryst. She resolves that she can never reveal the truth to him. Meanwhile, Marino makes a shocking decision: he gives up his police badge. He's absent from the stage when announcements are made, further complicating Scarpetta's already turbulent life.
Scarpetta and Marino arrive at their hotel, where Maggie pays them a surprising visit. She presents them with a sample of the skin graft, revealing that it was the same material used on Gwen and Cammie. She claims Reddy hacked her computer to ensure Scarpetta never trusted Maggie and dragged her into his nefarious deeds. She promises to keep Scarpetta's secret about killing Roy, and they agree to work together to take Reddy down.
At home, Scarpetta receives a call from Fruge, who informs her that Gwen and Cammie were part of a test group at Thor, explaining their shared skin graft. Fruge mentions another person in the test group but the connection is lost. As Scarpetta notices a flattened penny on her dining table, she turns around to see the murderer standing behind her - Officer Ryan! A flashback shows Ryan's twisted childhood where he was instructed by his uncle to place a coin on the train tracks and wait for it to be flattened. The uncle also molested young girls while Ryan watched.
Ryan confesses that Lori's murder inspired him and that he did everything to impress Scarpetta, even though he claims Gwen was "perfect." As he attacks Scarpetta with cords around her neck, she fights back, throwing him down the stairs and beating him with her bat, letting out all her rage. The episode ends with someone opening the front door and witnessing Scarpetta standing over Ryan's lifeless body.
