The episode kicks off nine years in retrospect, unveiling a romantic entanglement between The Man, Javier Godino, and Luba, portrayed by Alexandra Masangkay. Their past intertwines with Branco, Oscar Foronda, who turns out to be Luba's elder brother, a connection that might justify The Man's swift execution following his apprehension.

Stags – Season 1 Episode 4 1

Meanwhile, John Dwyer, played by Cavan Clerkin, appears to be making a miraculous recovery, only to find out that he and his companions are unfairly accused of Davide's, Adria Escudero's, demise. This revelation delights Luba, who thrives on perpetuating this falsehood among the masses.

Haunted by guilt over Davide's death, Branco seeks solace and forgiveness from a priest. However, his quest for penance takes a dark turn when the supposed clergyman hints that Branco might have been the intended victim all along. Matters escalate further when the same priest alleges witnessing Selma's, Paulina Galvez's, men opening fire on the Brit's cell prior to the explosion. Suspicion sets in deeply for Branco as he dashes to the confessional booth, only to find The Man has vanished into thin air.

Elsewhere, Clem, embodied by Sophie Lenglinger, engages in a conversation with her new roommate, Gemma, played by Aysha Daraaui. Their exchange suggests that Clem's condition is hardly better, yet her continued existence hints at something Selma still desires or needs from her. However, their nascent acquaintance barely progresses beyond a cursory introduction, thanks to Selma's timely interference.

Shortly thereafter, Selma convenes with Miguel (Alejandro Barrios), emphasizing the urgency of shielding the truth behind the aborted assassination from Branco. Miguel seems to grasp the significance and pledges to avoid further slip-ups. In a fleeting encounter, Selma also confers with Cisco (Daniel Triana), bestowing upon him the prestigious role of Gomez’s (Abel Folk) blood donor, though his enthusiasm for this revelation pales in comparison to hers.

As Kai (Jojo Macari) grills Stu (Nico Mirallegro) about the narcotics, tensions within the entire group escalate to a boiling point. Learning of Stu's possession of the incriminating phone, John hastily intervenes, prompting Stu to seek assistance from Ryan (Corin Silva). This exchange segues into Kai confronting Stu, baffled by his constant reliance on Ryan, reminding him of Ryan's betrayal by sleeping with Sam (Holli Dempsey) during his absence.

At Davide's funeral, Selma endeavors to console Branco, but she's startled to find the venue devoid of mourners. Branco reveals that he's dispatched them all, intending to gain a clear view of his adversaries lurking in the shadows. He subsequently urges her to accompany him elsewhere. Meanwhile, Stu and his cohorts debate their chances of a successful escape, their conversation marred by lingering disputes. This discourse culminates in a physical altercation between Stu and Ryan, which Branco's timely arrival interrupts, diffusing the tension for the moment.

Once Branco initiates his interrogation of Stu and his companions concerning Davide’s demise, it doesn’t escape his notice for long that something is amiss. With persistent probing, and much to Selma’s consternation, he unearths her involvement in hiring Hugo (Paul Forman) to serenade the party guests. By this juncture, Selma, correctly presuming her cover blown, bolts in a panic. Branco gives chase, and soon the distant echoes of gunfire punctuate the air.

As Selma and Branco exchange fire, her terror morphs into fury, compelling her to spill her guts about everything. She further unburdens herself, accusing him of betraying her to the Americans in Florida. Though seemingly taken aback by this revelation, Branco swiftly commands Luba to summon reinforcement. John seizes the opportunity, slipping through the unexpectedly ajar cell door, swiftly followed by the others. The situation descends into chaos as the gun battle intensifies, drawing more combatants onto both sides. Selma manages to slip away amidst the turmoil, while "The Man" seizes the moment of madness to assault a Tower Guard (Eduardo Moratilla) and seize his radio.

Armed with the radio, "The Man" attempts to contact the Control Room Guard (Mundy Rieu), urging him to deactivate the minefield. However, the Tower Guard, regaining consciousness, interrupts the transmission, sparking a brief, yet decisive, scuffle that "The Man" ultimately wins. Amidst the frenetic scenes playing out on the monitors, "The Man" persuades the Guard to deactivate the minefield, potentially sparing John’s life as he teeters on the brink of stepping into the deadly expanse.

While executing the minefield’s deactivation, the guard suffers an electrocution, momentarily knocking him unconscious. He eventually rouses and reactivates the minefield, albeit not before a prison-wide power outage throws the already volatile scenario into further disarray. Upon the restoration of electricity, most inmates, including John and Kai, find themselves perilously stranded in the heart of the minefield.

Amidst their heated disagreement, Ryan manages to halt Stu just shy of stepping into the minefield, mere moments before it is reactivated. Elsewhere, John finds himself engrossed in heartfelt apologies to Kai, acknowledging his failings as a father and reassuring him of his unwavering, albeit sometimes unseen, affection. Hardly has John stepped cautiously past a hidden mine when the piercing ring of a phone interrupts the tense silence.

Stu, desperate to seize any chance of escape, urges Kai to venture forth and toss the ringing device his way. Meanwhile, The Man faces similar rejection when he attempts to persuade two fellow fugitives to aid in his bid for freedom through the labyrinthine tunnels. They dismiss him with scathing indifference.

Feeling utterly abandoned by all other means, The Man sinks to his knees, resorting to fervent prayers for divine intervention, while Stu persists in his pleas to Kai. Eventually relenting, Kai retrieves the phone and hurls it, but not towards Stu as anticipated. To everyone's astonishment, it somehow arcs through the air and lands miraculously in The Man's grasp.

As the episode draws to a close, The Man, having overheard Ryan and Stu's contentious exchange about the phone, approaches them with a proposition for escape. Simultaneously, Kai, seemingly unaware of the impending peril, inadvertently triggers a mine, casting a shadow of dread over their fragile hopes for survival.
