Steal – Season 1 Episode 5 1

Meanwhile, Zara is approached by MI5. They're aware of her collaboration with Rhys and are eager to obtain all the valuable intel she's gathered thus far. If she doesn't comply, they're prepared to kill her in broad daylight.

Zara counters with a proposal to work together, allowing her to uncover the mastermind behind Lochmill. If she succeeds in identifying the culprit and shares the information directly with MI5, Zara will receive a new identity and need to leave the country. The reason MI5 wants to get involved is that the money could potentially be traced to foreign nationals, destabilizing not just Britain but other countries as well. MI5 intends to steer the investigation and narrative in their desired direction, while simultaneously throwing Rhys under the bus as the troubled lead investigator.

If Zara refuses, the MI5 boss warns her to tread carefully with Rhys. He brings up Rhys' gambling addiction and sows seeds of doubt about him potentially using her to obtain the money for himself. Zara confronts Rhys about his gambling at his place, and they eventually start kissing as they open up to each other.

In the morning, after sleeping together, Rhys receives a ping on possible fingerprint matches. However, there's a more pressing matter to contend with: the money has appeared in an offshore account linked to a family trust set up by the Chancellor. It's a shocking revelation, but Zara is also facing a tough situation at work when she arrives at Lochmill, given that she's locked up the server by running her risk simulations. Apparently, every time a simulation is run, it's actually logged on the system.

This revelation sparks an idea in Zara, and she embarks on a mission to uncover the copies herself, correlating them with the dates from the Investment Committee's recorded meeting. This discovery reveals that Milo, not Kate, was the one who ran the report. Zara confronts Milo, asserting her knowledge of his involvement in the underhanded scheme. Eventually, Milo confesses, admitting that he was the one who recruited Luke, who then enlisted Zara. He clarifies that he is not the mastermind behind the entire operation, hinting at a deeper layer of deception they must now confront.

Milo possesses a phone number given to him as a safety measure in case things went awry; it leads back to his residence. He was actually offered a staggering 20 million for his role in the heist, which is significantly more than what Zara and Luke received. However, he is just as much in the dark about the thieves' master plan as she is. This is particularly evident when considering the Chancellor's presumed involvement.

As she exits the premises, Zara is struck by a nagging sense that something isn't quite right. The thieves already had two people inside the office to verify the information, suggesting that Zara was chosen as a scapegoat. Both Luke and Milo were aware that the office would be stormed with guns, yet they had no concrete idea of how much would be stolen or how it would occur. However, seeing Luke's breakdown at his desk was enough for the thieves to believe they had a second fall-guy to rely on.

The thieves sought backstories and backgrounds of everyone inside the office and eventually settled on Zara. Presumably, she was desperate enough to turn her life around that she was willing to get involved in a heist.

In the midst of a dead-end job, a tumultuous family life, and the constant struggle to find happiness in the form of weekend alcohol, Zara was perceived as the office's biggest mess. The weight of these truths was heavy on her, and it was clear to everyone that she was not happy.

Meanwhile, Rhys and Ellie worked tirelessly to track down the thieves, using the fingerprint as their guide. However, they arrived too late, just as Luke's coup was about to take place. As Morgan turned his back, Luke attempted to flee across the fields, but was tackled by a thief who appeared out of nowhere and knocked him out.

Elsewhere, Zara made her way to see the MI5 boss, handing over the phone number from Milo. In exchange, she received a folder detailing a new life and identity. She had 24 hours to leave the country or risk being flagged as a threat and grounded indefinitely. The prospect of a fresh start was enticing, but with a catch - wiping her past slate clean.

With her new identity in hand, Zara immediately called her mother and made a deal. She arrived at the location with the cold wallet only to find that all her crypto had been taken and the wallet corrupted. It turned out that her mother had attempted to hack into it, destroying any chance of them making money. However, Zara had switched the cold wallets earlier, courtesy of her earlier slip-up. Down the road, Zara found the real wallet with 5 million still intact.

When Rhys and Ellie arrived at the farmhouse, they found the police already there. Rhys was not happy and believed he had been sold out. Sam Fitch was there and immediately accused Rhys of colluding with Zara. In fact, Superintendent Duff Nichols was about to suspend him as a result.

Zara caught up with Rhys after his suspension and tried to explain herself, pointing out that she had made a deal with MI5. Rhys was not pleased, especially when Zara offered to clear his debts. He saw it as her way of buying him off and tying up loose ends.

Zara wanted him to keep quiet but the damage had already been done. Given Rhys' suspension, he had nothing to lose. Still, he reluctantly agreed not to rat her out. The pair parted on bad terms, but when Zara headed home to grab her suitcase, she turned a corner and found Morgan there, holding a gun to her face.
