As the episode unfolds, Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) and Cal Jones (Chad Michael Murray) arrive at the hospital, where firefighters are diligently probing the source of a blaring fire alarm. Connie Boyle (Lauren Hammersley) hastily informs Rafe Vadas (Dakota Taylor) that someone has daringly lit a cigarette inside a patient's room. Maggie, pointing at a radiographic depiction of Harry Sully's (Scott Patterson) brain, reveals a subtle volume loss in his cerebral cortex. She further elaborates that Sully's albumin levels are abnormally low, and his liver enzymes have shot up, indicating Wernicke encephalopathy—a condition prevalent among alcoholics due to a vitamin B1 deficiency. A nurse alerts Dr. Rabney (Sharleen Kalayil) that Sully has departed the hospital, accompanied by another individual. Recognizing the description, Cal hypothesizes it could be Frank Cranebear (Tom Jackson).
Instead of heading back to the outpost, Frank and Sully opt for a fishing expedition. Meanwhile, Lola Gunderson (Amalia Williamson) confides in Edna Cranebear (Andrea Menard) her intent to delve into the accident with Cal's assistance. Edna ponders if this is the right course of action. Lola reassures her that uncovering the perpetrator might bring her peace.
On the road, Frank warns Sully that he'll return him to the hospital if he refuses to contact Edna and Maggie. Using the radio, Sully informs Edna of their fishing plans. Her insistent plea for them to return falls on deaf ears as Sully feigns a lost signal. Shortly thereafter, Cal and Maggie arrive in search of them. Edna fills them in on their fishing escapade. With no cellphone or radio reception, Sully and Frank remain unreachable. Maggie updates them on Sully's condition just as a hurricane alert blares through their phones.
Preparations for the impending hurricane are in full swing at the fire department. At the outpost, Sydney Shandon (Lindura), Edna, Cal, and Lola set aside their worries to fortify the outpost against the hurricane's fury. Sully and Frank arrive at a cabin. Frank warns of an approaching storm, but Sully remains skeptical. Elsewhere, Cal and Maggie caution Pete (Joel Thomas Hynes) about the impending hurricane. Pete insists that his camper is his sanctuary. Cal briefly reminisces about his father when Maggie receives a call from Andrew Mathews (Allan Hawco), urging her to return home. Resolute, she informs him of Sully's Wernicke's condition, which seems to surprise him. Cal speaks with her before departing to alert the campers. Andrew inquiries about her companion. She explains that Cal is aiding in hurricane preparations and will reside there permanently.
Sully is less than enthused about Frank's meal plan of bone broth, which Frank justifies as a brain cleanser. Meanwhile, Lola shares with Cal that Sully has always been a pillar of support for her, suggesting that his familial abandonment has led him to treat everyone like family. As they walk away, Maggie emerges from the shed. Connie offers hurricane preparedness tips to the newcomer, Alyssa Mackenzie. Lola invites John (Sebastien Labelle) and Ellis (Bri Neal) to take refuge with her until the storm passes. Discovering the generator's propane tank empty, Sydney calls Rob Shandon (Reid Price) to request a replacement be delivered to the outpost. Before concluding the call, she enquires after Finn Shandon (Zayn Maloney). He assures her that Finn is in capable hands.
In a poignant flashback, Sully humbly apologizes to Maggie for the delay in expressing his heartfelt pride in her accomplishments. Returning to the unfolding present, Sydney gently halts Maggie's attempt to lift a chair, mindful of her pregnancy. Maggie, insisting on her capability, confides in Sydney about eavesdropping on Lola's accusation that she had deserted Sully. She confesses her own belief that he hadn't cared enough to pursue her, until she stumbled upon his treasured collection of her photographs and newspaper clippings. Maggie ponders aloud on Sully's feelings about her rejection of him, and Sydney reassuringly replies that he is present now, by her side.
Sully voices his anxieties about mirroring his father's fate. Frank delves into the challenges of his upbringing as a multiracial boy in Alberta, painting a picture of relentless adversity that persisted even after relocating to the city and returning home unchanged. He laments the loss of his mother's regalia, a sentiment too painful to share with Edna.
Edna gripes about Frank's departure without notice, while Maggie confides her awareness of Sully's battling addiction to alcohol. Edna clarifies that Frank had been his sponsor and reassuringly informs Maggie that the blame for Sully's relapse does not lie with her, but solely with Sully himself. Elsewhere, Frank imparts wisdom to Sully, urging him to let his inner beacon illuminate his path. Reluctantly, Sully obeys, closing his eyes to seek guidance.
Ellis recounts to Lola their fateful first encounter, where she needed assistance with a flat tire, which John claims irrevocably altered his life's trajectory when she invited him out. Lola denies having a beau but harbors hopes for a change soon, as Cal arrives to secure her lawn furniture. In a parallel narrative, Sully's mind drifts back to his separation from young Maggie Sullivan (played by Polly Gallant-Mclean) and her mother. As an adult, Maggie confronts him, questioning why she had never been deemed sufficient for him. Hurt and frustrated, Sully walks away, with Frank trailing behind.
As the storm gathers momentum, Connie discovers Alysa nursing an ankle injury, her face contorted in pain. Meanwhile, Sydney urges Maggie with a sense of urgency that one of the campers, stubbornly refusing to evacuate, poses a problem. Maggie promptly identifies the holdout as Pete and braves the tempest to confront him. Edna breaks the news to Sydney that Rob has yet to deliver the crucial propane, while both cellular and landline communications fail.
After a thorough examination, Connie concludes that Alysa's ankle, though painful, is thankfully not fractured. As Connie expertly wraps the injury, Alysa reveals her reluctance to leave, her finances intricately tied to the place. Connie gently reminds her that no amount of money is worth risking her life, and kindly offers to escort her to safety. Alysa, recognizing the wisdom in Connie's words, accepts the offer.
Elsewhere, Sully complains of a lingering illness, prompting Frank to rush out to retrieve his truck. Maggie encounters a disoriented and frightened Pete, who only snaps out of his confusion when Maggie mentions Molly's name, realizing they are in Nova Scotia, not Afghanistan. She insists they retreat to the outpost immediately. Frank, meantime, finds his truck unresponsive, and all radio contact lost.
Cal arrives back at the outpost just as the lights flicker and die, plunging the area into darkness. Edna and Sydney quickly gather lanterns to illuminate the encampment. Molly, terrified by the storm's fury, flees into the woods, with Pete and Maggie in hot pursuit. Sully, searching the cabin for water, stumbles upon a bottle of alcohol instead. Just as he brings the bottle to his lips, haunted memories of hitting Lola with his vehicle flash before him, causing him to shatter the bottle in a fit of rage.
Sydney returns to the outpost to find Rob and Finn, learning from Rob that Rafe had rescued them from being stuck in the mud with the propane. She expresses gratitude to Rafe and whisks Finn away to change out of his soaking wet clothes. Connie alerts Rafe that the hurricane has escalated to a Category 2, prompting Cal and Rafe to venture into the storm to search for Pete and Maggie.
Frank returns to the cabin to find shards of the broken alcohol bottle strewn across the floor. He confirms the truck remains inoperable. Confronted with Frank's discovery, Sully confesses to his guilt-ridden act of hitting Lola on her bike. Elsewhere, Maggie searches frantically for Pete and Molly when a sudden, unnerving occurrence causes her to scream out in terror. Cal's voice, calling her name from the depths of the encroaching darkness, marks the cliffhanger end to the episode.
