In the fifth episode of The Boroughs, Sam, Judy, and Wally venture down the secret passage from the oven, leading them to a labyrinth of vast tunnels, each one leading to one of their homes. Their mission is clear: to follow the trail of the creature's blood.

Meanwhile, Blaine is plagued by a nightmare where an older Annaliese on crutches shows him the lifeless body of a younger Annaliese, who begins to glitch as he watches. When he awakens, Annaliese is asleep next to him as usual. He begins his day by mixing a mysterious golden liquid into his morning juice. As he heads out, he receives a call from Hank about Paz's situation. Hank suggests a raise, but Blaine firmly reminds him that their "portion" was agreed upon and cannot be changed. Hank reluctantly acquiesces.
He takes a sip from a vial containing the same golden liquid, which seems to invigorate him. He goes through Paz's phone and realizes that Renee has found the picture of Milton and Blaine from the 70s.
Art awakens in the hospital to find Annaliese by his bedside. She questions him about his appearance and what he may have found in the desert, but he simply says he wants to go home. After she leaves, he checks his pockets and finds the seed of the orange fruit.
Hank pays Renee a visit at her house. She tries to flee, but he overpowers her and she passes out.
In the tunnels, the trio loses sight of the trail of blood. Sam searches ahead and discovers a small puzzle piece (similar to those involved in Lily's death). The piece glitches as he watches, and he tells the others that he's found the trail again.
Meanwhile, Blaine calls Claire over to The Manor and tells her that her father might be getting sick. He seems to successfully sow a seed of doubt in her mind.
Somewhere outside The Borough, Renee wakes up in the trunk of her own car next to Paz as Hank drives. The two start screaming, but Hank simply stops the car and uses a pipe to send exhaust fumes into the trunk.
In the tunnels, the trio finally finds the creature, but it is wounded and in a pathetic state. Wally wants to try and save it, but Judy shoots it in the head to stop it from suffering more. Sam realizes that this was not the same creature that killed Jack, and a flurry of noises proves that there are more creatures who will now come after them. As they start running, Sam sees more visions of Lily in an agitated state, glitching near the creature's body.
Art goes looking for the tree again and is shocked to find that it has died - no green leaves, no orange fruit. Annaliese is already there. She tells him a story about how this used to be a mining company that dug deep into the ground until she and her husband bought the place in the 1940s. At this point, her eyes glow and her voice becomes raspy.
She enquires from Art about the source of his youthful vitality, and he shares with her the tale of the peach he consumed. He presents her with the seed, which she promptly ingests whole. However, soon thereafter, she regurgitates a dark liquid and her countenance transforms into something aged and malevolent. She laments her misinterpretation that Art had discovered "another way," and lunges towards him, but he escapes.
Upon waking, Renee discovers her hands bound to the car's steering wheel. Hank's plan was to stage a lover's car crash. Yet, she manages to untie the ropes and attacks Hank with his own taser. She and Paz leap out as the car and Hank plummet over the cliff.
Art, navigating through the dark tunnels, is suddenly attacked by Annaliese. His cries are heard by Judy, Wally, and Sam, who follow the noise and discover Annaliese upon him. Judy fires at her, but it appears to have no effect. Nonetheless, Annaliese retreats after witnessing their converging presence.
The entire group drives Art's car back towards the town, encountering Renee and Paz on their way.
In the desert, someone comes across Hank's body, which also features glowing eyes.
Sitting in a diner, all the characters share their findings with one another. Paz informs them that the security office houses a room filled with monsters locked in cages. They ponder if Blaine and his people are feeding on the monsters while the monsters are feeding on them. However, Paz notes a discrepancy: Hank was seen drinking a golden liquid while the monster's blood is blue.
Another concern is that Wally will soon require his medication. Paz volunteers to venture into town and pick it up, as no one apart from Hank knew of his involvement.
Annaliese returns home in a weakened and battered state. Blaine submerges her in a bathtub filled with the golden liquid and vows to punish those who harmed her. Back at the diner, Art reveals to Judy that he knows about Jack. As the group exits the diner, they spot a group of cars approaching. It's Blaine. He's found them.
