The episode unfolds with Jennings anxiously awaiting by a quaint phone booth, his eyes glued to the horizon. Charlie Miller steps out of his abode, unaware of Lundy’s watchful gaze from afar. McLean discreetly hands Boyce a pair of letters, instructing him to dispatch them either to the Isle of Man or Spain, contingency plans for if their phone tapping is uncovered—either scenario necessitating his resignation. Boyce grants the green light to both Jennings and Lundy, setting their mission into motion.

The Gold – Season 2 Episode 3 1

Brightwell trails Douglas closely, relaying to Jennings in hushed tones that time is of the essence, though she assures him of her swiftness. With purposeful strides, Jennings and Lundy converge on Douglas's and Charlie's residences, their mission to eavesdrop on their conversations. Lundy, upon completing his task, makes a hasty exit, just narrowly evading Charlie’s return. Simultaneously, Brightwell cleverly detains Douglas with a pseudo-lost traveler's query about the nearest station, cleverly facilitating Jennings’s undetected departure.

In Tenerife, John discreetly delivers another bribe, only to be informed by his contact that the next payment must double due to the scrutiny his activities are bringing upon the island. The man warns John that refusal would spell trouble with both the police and the bank, emphasizing his pivotal role in shielding John from scrutiny. Obliging, John asserts that he bribes all parties involved. The contact smiles, revealing himself as the unseen hand that keeps John’s secrets buried.

John proceeds to meet Ivan, proudly announcing the laundering of his ill-gotten gains. Ivan, equally solitary, entrusts him with more funds and inquires about his circle of friends. John admits to having few, mirroring Ivan’s solitude. With the new influx of money, John visits Enrique, who cautions that concealing dirty money will prove challenging without a proportional influx of clean funds.

Elsewhere, Boyce conducts a clandestine meeting with Shirley in his car, Bowman lurking menacingly in the backseat. Boyce reveals Bowman’s role as her supervisor, as Shirley hands over John’s account details. She warns Boyce of John’s underappreciated cunning and danger, urging swift action. Meanwhile, John jets off in his private aircraft to visit the French woman he impregnated. She offers him sustenance and intimacy, both of which he politely declines. As he departs, he slips her an envelope filled with cash. She rejects the gesture, revealing her hurt beyond monetary repair. Returning to England, John faces Marnie’s wrath for arriving too late to tuck their daughters into bed.

On the serene Isle of Man, Brightwell is convinced that his involvement in the case should cease immediately, given that Douglas has now laid eyes on him. Jennings reassures him, stating that all will be well since Douglas won't encounter him again until he's in handcuffs. As they keep Douglas under surveillance, he makes his way back home. Meanwhile, at Charlie's abode, the telephone jangles, prompting Lundy, perched in his car outside with headphones clamped over his ears, to eavesdrop intently.

It's Scott, the American, on the line. He mentions encountering some hurdles but assures that he's taken care of them. Meanwhile, two figures aboard his boat are seen heaving bodies overboard, their actions obscured from view. Soon after, Charlie dials Douglas's number, with Jennings and Brightwell eavesdropping avidly.

Upon answering, Douglas's attention is diverted as Charlie notices his lamp is askew and his phone booth loose. He instructs Douglas to meet him at the pub near his office and promptly hangs up. Charlie prepares to depart, reversing his car up the hill to peer into the parked vehicles. Lundy, cunningly lying flat to avoid detection, manages to escape Charlie's gaze.

Elsewhere, John engages in hush-hush negotiations with a man he bribes for access to the public land behind El Dorado. The man hints that while selling the land might be feasible, procuring building permits would be out of the question. John clarifies that he has no intention of constructing anything; he merely wishes to claim he is.

Boyce, meanwhile, has introduced a new woman to his department on secondment. She reveals that she volunteered for the assignment due to her expertise in VAT fraud and expresses her intention to scrutinize John's accounts. She swiftly deduces that these aren't the genuine accounts, citing the absence of debt as an indication of hidden funds and alternative accounts. She informs Boyce's contact that a deeper dive is required to uncover the truth.

At El Dorado, John pitches a new batch of tourists on his timeshare deals, enticing them with the promise of upcoming constructions. Following this, Shirley tails John into his office, demanding a comprehensive understanding of the accounts. She questions his motives for seeking this information now, and they engage in a tense exchange about trust. He urges her to make do with what she has and never pose such questions again. She agrees and exits the room.

Kadene, Logan's partner, arrives at his office with the blueprints for the school in hand. Scott, who happens to be present, is in the midst of depositing another sack of money. Catching sight of this scene, Kadene decides to make a hasty exit. Meanwhile, John has just handed over a staggering $10 million to the money launderer, who expresses astonishment, suggesting he could route it through other business ventures but insists on proper accounts for this transaction. He pleads for more time, to which John sternly replies, "No."

Back at Logan's office, Scott reveals he traveled by air to meet him, eliciting an angry response from Logan. Scott attempts to calm him, hinting that the island and its surrounding ocean hold secrets more securely than Logan realizes. This comment is eerily followed by a cut to the ocean, where one of the bodies Scott disposed of from his boat bobs to the surface.

In the Governor's office, Gabriella from the DEA bursts in with urgent news: two bodies of drug dealers have been discovered off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. These dealers were last seen in the company of a man named Scott, currently located on Tortola and having arrived there by air yesterday. Gabriella demands Scott's apprehension, threatening to deploy more DEA agents if the local police fail to act. Kadene tries to access the relevant file, but the Governor dismissively tells her not to worry.

John boards his private jet once again, bound for France. His former employee, now visibly pregnant, inquires about his plans. Under pressure, he assures her he's there for a reason. She perceptively notes that his presence only confirms his safety and insists he come with a solid plan next time. Secluded in the jet's bathroom, John indulges in cocaine before rejoining his family in England.

The Governor phones Logan, inquiring if he knows Scott. Upon receiving an affirmative answer, the Governor issues a stern warning: hand Scott over to the police. Meanwhile, at John's residence, Marnie expresses concern for his well-being. He reassures her but suggests installing security around their home. Marnie, seeking clarity, asks what's going on. John reveals that Tenerife is becoming increasingly volatile, involving dangerous characters. He sees this as a positive sign, hinting at his imminent return. However, Marnie, who feels unsafe only when he's around, suggests perhaps he shouldn't come back at all.

Logan dials the Governor back, informing her that he has Scott in his sights at the bar. He urges her to muster as many DEA agents and local law enforcement officers as possible for the operation. Meanwhile, Shirley is sneaking into El Dorado, searching diligently for the financial accounts. In John's office, her meticulous probing uncovers a stash of cocaine concealed in his desk.

Across the island, at the bar on Tortola, Gabriella discreetly signals to the approaching police. Meanwhile, back at El Dorado, Enrique arrives just as Shirley is inches away from locating the accounts. Agilely, she manages to conceal herself before Enrique detects her presence. Instead, he snatches the accounts from Shirley's desk and swiftly exits. Determined, she tails him as he heads back to where John has him stationed.

As the police and DEA officers close in on the bar in Tortola, Scott has already vanished, spotted fleeing on a boat under Logan's watchful eye.

The following day, Charlie sets his sights on purchasing a boat, but the salesman informs him that the vessel he desires is either undergoing repairs, already sold, or prohibitively expensive. Charlie asserts confidently that money is no object and insists on having the boat ready within a week, offering an additional premium for expedited service. Lundy alerts Boyce about Charlie's boat acquisition plans, suggesting they could intercept him in international waters. Boyce assures him that he'll reach out to Gibraltar to arrange naval support, emphasizing that they need to venture ten miles offshore to make the arrest legally binding.

Jerren visits John's residence in search of him, but receiving no answer, he begins to explore the premises. Cocaine residue catches his eye on the coffee table. Just then, John descends the stairs, confronting Jerren about his unannounced visit. Jerren cryptically replies that he's waiting, prompting John to warn him never to set foot in his house again.

Elsewhere, at Douglas Airport, Douglas lounges in the executive area, griping about the subpar cuisine. Jennings, tailing him discreetly, calls Boyce. Harper, the newest recruit to the task force, answers the phone and transfers the call to Boyce. Jennings informs him that Douglas is bound for London, prompting Boyce to instruct her to continue trailing him closely.

At John's place, Ivan arrives with additional funds for him, inquiring about his well-being and cautioning him to be vigilant. John assures Ivan that he hasn't missed much, and both their gazes turn towards Jerren. Meanwhile, Enrique steps out of his workplace, unaware that Shirley has slipped inside, with Bowman keeping watch. She delves into the papers scattered on the desk, but her intrusion is cut short by John and Jerren's unexpected arrival. When confronted, Shirley claims she'd risk imprisonment for what John is up to since her signature validates the accounts. She urges him to trust her, just as she once trusted him. As she prepares to depart, John persists in his inquiry, which she evades by suddenly dashing off.

John and Jerren give chase, following Shirley's trail to the El Dorado office and its adjacent apartments. She manages to slip into one of the apartments and flees to the balcony. John fumbles with the door handle while Jerren forces it open. With a gun aimed at her, Jerren confronts her, and John seizes her, demanding to know whom she was communicating with. She dismisses his concerns as paranoia induced by cocaine.

Enter Bowman, feigning intoxication and mistaking the apartment. Shirley seizes the moment, pleading with him to escort her to a taxi. As they make their escape, John instructs Jerren to track down Shirley. Jerren agrees but first seeks a private word with John. Bowman contacts Boyce, reporting Shirley's terror and her unwillingness to testify. However, she did uncover discrepancies in the accounts, suggesting hidden funds. Boyce strategizes a new approach, insisting on capturing Shirley and securing her conviction's reversal.

Elsewhere, Douglas reunites with Sarah, the woman featured in a university photo alongside him and Logan. He fondly refers to them as the "old gang," even labeling them childhood sweethearts, despite her disagreement. Curiosity piqued, she inquiries about the motive behind his visit. He reveals that he heard about her divorce and yearns to understand what transpired after she ended their relationship, branding her "the love of his life," upon graduation. She corrects him, emphasizing that they were not soulmates. He reminisces about their shared plans and her abrupt departure for an enigmatic figure. Sarah confesses that it was Logan she left him for, who in turn abandoned her a week later. She underscores that it was two decades ago and admits to casual encounters, but they meant more to Douglas than to her. She concludes by advising him that if he seeks answers, they lie neither with her nor with Logan.

As she exits, Jennings and Brightwell are perched on a bench outside, anticipating her departure. Douglas's phone buzzes, and it's Scott on the line. He pleads for financial assistance, to which Douglas responds that wiring money to America isn't feasible. Scott then reveals a shocking twist – he's actually in London. Meanwhile, in Tenerife, Jerren boasts of a Colombian contact who can supply pure, affordable cocaine, far superior to what John has been consuming. He assures John of his discretion, and when questioned about his trustworthiness, Jerren hands John a small pouch of the illicit substance, a gesture of confidence.

In Tortola, Kadene arrives home to find Logan awaiting her with flowers and a ring. He slips it onto her finger and pops the question. She declares her reluctance to leave the island, and he reveals his intentions to stay put too. She eventually agrees to marry him, and they share a passionate kiss. Elsewhere, McLean descends into Boyce’s office, bringing news that ITV is planning a documentary on John's activities in Tenerife. The Times is also onto them, sniffing around the Isle of Man. While she’s managed to stall the press for a bit longer, McLean admits she can’t keep them at bay indefinitely – perhaps just a few days, maybe a week. She inquiries about Boyce’s progress in capturing Charlie and John, to which he responds similarly – days, perhaps a week away. Boyce then requests to review the corruption allegations leveled against Lundy, seeking clarity.

Back in Tenerife, Jerren chauffeurs John around as John marvels at the potency of the cocaine Jerren provided. Soon after, John slumps unconscious. In Tortola, the Governor confronts Logan, furious about the misinformation regarding Scott. Logan justifies his actions, claiming he let her shine in the eyes of the DEA while orchestrating Scott’s escape. She insists she doesn’t want drugs tarnishing her territory, but he counters that it was the money that propelled her to the Governor’s seat. She threatens to disrupt anyone’s peace on Tortola if she so chooses, especially foreigners. Logan counters that his impending marriage to Kadene will grant him Tortolian citizenship with extradition protection. The Governor warns she can outlaw whatever Logan is up to through legislation, but he threatens to bankrupt the island with his revelations. He asserts that once the wolves are in, they can’t be expelled, and neither can the dirty money they brought in. He reminds her that she voluntarily invited these predators, sacrificing her integrity for financial gain, and now, there’s no turning back.

Jerren props up the unsteady John and ushers him into the meeting with Ivan, while positioning himself menacingly behind Ivan. With a declarative tone, Jerren announces his takeover, informing John that he can manage better and suggesting John retire for the day. Suddenly, John's demeanor sharpens; he denounces having ingested any substance Jerren had given him. At this revelation, a Russian lurking behind Jerren swiftly incapacitates him with the butt of his gun, as John utters a final, defiant "It's over."

In Tortola, Gabriella from the DEA makes her way to see the Governor, only to find her absence noted. Sharing a grave update with Kadene, Gabriella reveals that DEA agents are en route and hints at her awareness of unfolding events on the island. As she exits, Kadene curiosity piqued, peruses Scott's file and realizes with a start that it belongs to the same man she glimpsed in Logan's office.

Jerren is roughly shoved into a car by the Russians, while John vows to extract him from the island. Ivan interjects, insisting they are partners and assigning Viktor to escort and safeguard John. Though John protests his self-sufficiency, Ivan is unyielding in his resolve. Elsewhere, Douglas arrives at Heathrow Airport, tailgated closely by Jennings and Brightwell. They relay to Boyce via radio that Douglas is meeting an unidentified man – Scott, in fact.

Douglas conveys to Scott his inability to travel to London, withdraw £500,000 in cash, and bring it to the airport. Scott responds by revealing his plans to visit a mutual friend in Spain, inviting Douglas to join him under the guise of keeping an eye on him. He discloses that the Federal authorities have discovered two bodies, enough to sentence Douglas to life imprisonment if apprehended. Scott issues a chilling threat: if Douglas's actions lead to Scott's capture, there will be three corpses to account for.

Douglas ventures into the restroom, only to be promptly tailed by Brightwell. In the meantime, across the seas in Spain, Charlie's phone rings out, with Lundy eavesdropping on the other end. Douglas, hidden away in the confines of the lavatory, dials Charlie in a hush, revealing that the American psychopath has set foot in England and is now stationed at Heathrow Airport, compelling Douglas to meet him. Douglas discloses that this psychotic individual has already claimed two lives and is now casting threats his way. Charlie urgently tries to silence him, but Lundy's ears have already caught every harrowing detail. Lundy's eyes fixate on Charlie, who begins frantically packing his belongings, preparing for an immediate departure.

Emerging from the restroom, Douglas catches sight of Brightwell and instantly bolts. This sudden movement startles Scott, who then notices Jennings. Scott swiftly informs Boyce, who promptly orders their arrest. Scott and Douglas are promptly apprehended. Meanwhile, Lundy dials Boyce, urging him to detain Charlie as well, stating that Charlie is on the run and not aboard the intended vessel. Boyce responds by reminding Lundy of his lack of jurisdiction, but Lundy counters by emphasizing Charlie's substantial wealth, which could enable him to vanish indefinitely. Boyce counters this by suggesting there's still a chance Charlie is unaware of being targeted. However, as Lundy stands within the confines of the phone booth, he expresses his doubts, saying, "I'm not so sure about that, sir." Charlie, turning around, catches Lundy's gaze, reminding him that he's a world away from home but vows to cross paths with him again. In Tenerife, John receives an urgent call from Kenneth Noye, seeking his assistance.
