Episode 2 of The Lady begins with a flashback to 1992, where Jane and Sarah visit a tarot reader. The woman confidently asserts to Sarah that the American friend is not her destiny, as he has fulfilled his purpose in her life. Turning to Jane, she asks if there is a perfect match for her. By holding her hands, the tarot reader tells Jane that there is a man in her life who will bring great passion and open new worlds. However, once she meets him, there will be no going back. As they step out, they are met by reporters who want to know how Sarah is doing outside the palace.

In the office, Detective Douglas is staring at a newspaper headline. He is unhappy that the media is linking the Jane case to the royal family. He realizes that he will be the one answerable to both the media and the royal family, which only adds pressure to solve the case.
Through another flashback, Jane has dinner with a journalist friend and mentions Sarah's ongoing struggles. Apparently, they are about to hold a gala, but Sarah is going through a separation and a house move. She also has fewer servants due to financial constraints. As it turns out, Charles has been working for Sarah since she wanted a financial expert.
Back home, Charles and Jane get into a heated argument, with Jane telling him that he makes her ill and ruins everything. Charles retaliates by saying that when Jane isn't screaming, she's sobbing. She asks him to leave if he can't put up with her. She throws an object at him, but he dodges it, though it hits and breaks their photo portrait.
Currently, the detectives are piecing together information by tracking the calls Jane made. Charles comes to the police station to give his statement about his last encounter with Jane. He claims that Jane contacted him mainly about relationship troubles via texts or calls. Shortly after, Charles receives a text from Jane asking him what is wrong and why the press wants her.
In a flashback to 1996, Sarah is invited to the Queen Victoria's gala to speak about her book. She applauds her team, especially Jane, who has been her dedicated assistant. At the same time, Aleksandra exchanges pleasantries with Luis Castillo, whom she tells Jane is charming. The scene cuts to Aleksandra in the police questioning room, where she reveals that Jane learned a few tricks during their European trip that helped her seduce Luis.
The scene then jumps to Jane waking up next to Luis. He mentions a trip to Greece to see his friends, and Jane decides she wants to join them. The next morning, Jane arrives and informs Sarah of her plans to go to Greece with Luis. Sarah asks her to make sure Claudia picks the right outfits for her, but she seems displeased that Jane is taking her first vacation in years.
In Greece, Jane is still worried that something might go wrong with Sarah, so she keeps calling and texting to check in. Luis insists that she should take a siesta to calm herself down. He then excuses himself to hang out with his friends. Hours later, when Luis returns to the hotel, Jane enquires why he took so long to return. He insists that he was with his friends and that was his purpose for visiting the island. He also clarifies that he never invited Jane to come with him; she pretty much invited herself.
Luis insists that they should remain friends, requesting a cordial breakup. Jane, however, becomes enraged and nearly lashes out at him. After returning home, Jane begins to secretly stalk Luis. She witnesses him with another woman and enters his house, causing a mess. She even tears up his suits. When Luis returns home, he is furious and sends a voice note to Jane, ordering her never to return. He threatens to change the locks and call the police if she shows up again.
At the palace, Sarah and Claudia are getting along well, leaving Jane feeling ignored. On her 30th birthday, Jane receives a necklace as a gift, but it feels cheap to her. She seems to be falling out of favor with Sarah. Furthermore, Claudia informs her that she should leave since the Duchess is under financial pressure and something has to give.
Following the loss of her job, Jane becomes depressed. After hearing the news of Diana's death, she writes to Sarah. Unfortunately, Sarah never writes back, something that Jane complains about to her mother during a phone call. While on the call, the intercom rings, and it's Aleksandra at the door. She asks Jane why she was spotted at Luis's house again and suggests that she should stop. Jane invites her for dinner on Friday, but unfortunately, when Jane arrives at the bar that Friday, Aleksandra calls to cancel on her.
A man named Tommy approaches Jane and asks to have a conversation with her. Initially, she refuses but later agrees to have one drink and leaves with him. They talk about Jane's 10-year employment with Sarah and her dismissal. Tommy thinks she is great and never deserved such treatment. They leave for the next bar, where they have fun. However, Tommy's brother claims that Jane wasn't the kind of girl his brother used to hang out with.
Through another flashback, we witness Jane and Tommy cheering happily after winning a bet on a horse race. They share a kiss, and Tommy promises to stick by Jane's side. In the present, the police find a recorded police call where Tommy had called for help regarding Jane. He was worried that they were hurting each other and needed police assistance. Unfortunately, the police failed to act on the call and never intervened. The call was placed at 11:35 pm at Tommy's place, a day before his murder. The episode concludes with Jane driving as the police intensify their search for her.
