Elsewhere, Erik and Arrington delve into Peter's house, uncovering books and cards from a mysterious Jim. Erik senses a discord in the evidence, sensing that Peter's status as a suspect is far from conclusive. Arrington concurs, and they decide to pursue a previous lead, convinced that the truth lies elsewhere.

At the White House, the President engages in a tense discussion with Farr regarding Peter's sudden departure. Farr reveals that Peter abruptly appeared last night, declaring his resignation from their service. The President speculates that Peter has abducted Maddie as a bargaining chip to uncover secrets about his father, and she fears he has also taken Rose hostage. The stakes have been raised, and the night is far from over.

The President pondered, questioning Farr's wisdom in hiring Peter. Farr erupted in defense, reminding the President of her unwavering dedication from the outset. Yet, the President, while voicing her trust, questioned Farr's judgment in Peter's appointment. Farr conceded a misstep, vowing to rectify it. The President then requested that Farr step aside from the matter.

Meanwhile, Erik and Arrington ventured into the New Leaf, an environmental NGO spearheaded by Maddie's mentor, Paulo. They learned that Paulo had confided in a staff member about his intention to induct Maddie into their fold. The staff also revealed the existence of Matteo, Paulo's erstwhile lover, but one who had mysteriously vanished for weeks.

Elsewhere, Peter's internet search for mentions of himself grew obsessive. Rose cautioned him against this unhealthy obsession, inquiring about his father. Peter recounted his father's accusation of leaking classified documents, jeopardizing national security. Despite knowing his father's innocence, Peter said he joined the FBI because his father taught him to trust the institution and seek the truth.

They deliberated on their next move, and Rose proposed using Liam's badge to access the FBI's Metro Bombing case files. Among the suspect list, the name Colin Worley stood out. Recognizing the limitations of hacking county records, they decided to visit the public records office for further information.

In another corner, Wicks, Farr, and the Vice President convened. Wicks had received a distressing video of Maddie, along with the kidnapper's demands. He wanted the Vice President to confess to planning and covering up the Metro bombing within two days. The Vice President agreed to comply, intending to retract his confession later, but Farr vetoed this plan. She urged him to abandon the guise of a grieving father and wait for them to secure Maddie's release.

There was also the looming issue of Maddie's potential return. Her hatred for her father was well-known, and she had plans to ruin him. Her therapist had betrayed her to Farr, who then instructed Wicks' assassins to retrieve the incriminating evidence Maddie had hidden. It turned out to be footage of her confrontation with her father, revealing the truth behind Sara's demise. This was the content that Ellen and Dale had killed the nanny for.

After hours of calling out for assistance, Maddie abandons her passive approach and takes charge. She clandestinely digs a hole alongside her bed, expanding it furtively when Matteo is absent. Matteo reveals to her that Paulo had been exploiting her trust. Enthused with the prospect of vengeance, Matteo finds Maddie's proposal of assisting him in destroying her father intriguing. She discloses the existence of a video, but Matteo's return brings disheartening news—the footage has vanished, and the woman in that house has been slain. Despite this setback, Maddie persists in her offer to aid Matteo, yet he remains hesitant.

Later in the night, Erik and Arrington report to Farr and Ben, citing Matteo as a potential suspect. However, Farr insists that Peter remains the primary suspect, much to Erik and Arrington's bewilderment. Erik suggests that while they investigate Matteo, other agents should focus on Peter, but Ben remains firm on their current trajectory. Frustrated, Arrington attempts to voice her opinion, but Ben swiftly silences her.

Farr contacts Wick and shares details about Matteo, sending him a sketch. Wick recognizes the figure and Farr underscores that Matteo is a significant angle to explore. The following morning, Ellen breaks into Wick's abode, and a bargain is struck. They agree that Ellen will hunt for and eliminate Matteo, while Wick secures Peter's whereabouts, enabling Ellen to seek her revenge.

Meanwhile, Peter and Rose are on the run. They pilfer a vehicle, and Rose sneaks into the Public Records building. With her charm and lies, she convinces the attendant there that her sister is in dire straits. She promises to put in a good word for the attendant's son's application to Berkeley, claiming to be an alumnus. The attendant, though adhering to protocol, surreptitiously follows Rose out and hands her the desired documents.

Outside, Peter was promptly spotted by a group of conspiracy-minded patriots, prompting him to make a hasty exit. Rose, however, engaged them in a heated debate, only to be rescued by Peter's timely intervention. His anger flared as he scolded Rose for engaging with those men, yet she stood her ground, asserting her willingness to fight for his defense.

Returning to the boat, they delved into the documents, uncovering the tragic truth that Colin had perished from a drug overdose. Among his possessions, they discovered a key-card for a P.O. Box belonging to one of Turn Lake's subsidiaries. Peter's eyes narrowed as he scrutinized the arrest photos, recognizing the telltale rattlesnake tattoo. Convinced that Colin's murder was a silencing attempt after he had planted the bomb on the train, they resolved to investigate the P.O. Box further.

Meanwhile, Erik and Arrington visited Peter's godfather, Jim, who claimed ignorance. Peter had severed ties with him after Jim published an article accusing Peter's father of treason. Despite showing him a video of Peter and Rose's confrontation with the patriots, which had surfaced online mere hours ago, Jim steadfastly maintained Peter's innocence and claimed he knew nothing.

Erik's attention was drawn to a picture of Jim and Peter aboard a boat, and he inquired about the location. Arrington fretted over the possibility of being removed from the case if they failed to uncover more, hoping to stay and support Maddie. They decided to investigate the boat, only to be startled by the sight of Peter and Rose on their way out to inspect the P.O. Box. They apprehended them, but Peter quickly reassured Rose that all would be well.
