The Testaments – Season 1 Episode 5 1

The cream of the crop is present, hoping to secure marriage proposals. However, Agnes remains reeling, and her standoffishness towards Becka is evident. Aunt Estee addresses the girls before they embark on the dancefloor, where a synchronized routine ignites the festivities. Aunt Lydia steals the show with her performance, drawing accolades from all.

The Father's Dance ensues, where Commanders join their daughters on the floor. This triggers a distressing moment for Agnes, who encounters Becka's father and begins to unravel.

The fathers then present their daughters to their prospective suitors, leading to engaging conversations. Agnes engages in a delightful banter with a nervous young man who discusses "Jaws" (a film she hasn't seen), but it's merely a prelude to the entrance of the more powerful Commanders into the room.

Meanwhile, outside, Daisy's luck holds as she escapes being sent to the colonies after she angrily rebuffs an older Commander who attempts to touch her. Garth appears, promising to rectify the situation.

As the man exits, Garth engages Daisy in a whispered conversation about the chocolate she was gifted. It appears that the rebels are concerned Mackenzie might be negotiating a deal with the Japanese for artillery. Garth instructs Daisy to keep their voices down, but her discreteness is questionable. The tension between Agnes and Becka is not lost on the other girls, though Shu is convinced this is merely a competition for the Commanders' affections.

The Commander who was dancing with Agnes is summoned to the War Room, leaving him to entrust Garth with continuing the dance. Clearly, there's an underlying chemistry between them, and it's one of the few fleeting moments of joy for Agnes. However, Garth doesn't want her getting into trouble, so he hastily departs.

As for Aunt Lydia, she confronts several Commanders and convinces them not to let the girls get drunk. When she leaves, there's an intriguing undercurrent of dissent as Vidala is taken aside by Commander Judd, suggesting they discuss the future. Unfortunately, one of the girls, Becka, is visibly intoxicated. Shu leaves Daisy to handle this situation and they head into the bathroom together.

Becka confesses that she hasn't eaten all day, which doesn't help her situation. However, she does open up about her feelings, including how she doesn't want the Commanders to look at her anymore. As they talk, Becka practically admits that she's in love with Agnes. Daisy reassures her that it's okay to feel this way, but Becka hurriedly leaves before she gets into more trouble.

Further drama ensues when rumors about Becka begin to swirl. Shu becomes angry and slaps one of the girls for spreading gossip about her. Meanwhile, Agnes is taken away from the party by Aunt Gabanna, who brings her to Commander Judd. In front of the most powerful men on camera, she's forced to open up and discuss how she'll be a good wife.

After a moment of uncertainty, Agnes finally regained her composure and was able to deliver her speech. She clung to the belief that God would guide her through, but whether He would or not was another matter. As the party began to wind down, Agnes spoke to Becka, who was clearly worried. Agnes did her best to comfort her friend. Meanwhile, Aunt Lydia was furious. She questioned Vidala and how she had so much to prove, considering some of the girls had been drunk under her watch. This didn't sit well with them, as Aunt Vidala lashed out at the girls. However, this was cut short when Hulda burst in after ringing the bell. She had just started her period, and the girls were ecstatic... except for Shu. On the way home, Commander Mackenzie spoke to Garth, who had just received a significant promotion. He was about to become a Commander, which made him eligible for marriage. This raised Agnes' hopes as she wanted to try and match with him.
