The fifth episode of Season 1 of "Will Trent" kicks off with an intense scene as Will and Angie frantically search for Will's beloved dog, Betty, who had slipped out of the house after Angie inadvertently left the front door ajar. Despite Betty's eventual safe return, the couple's argument escalates, with Angie lambasting Will for his constant nitpicking and highlighting her flaws, while Will counters by accusing Angie of seeking any excuse to terminate their tumultuous relationship. Their breakup, a recurrent theme in their dynamic, ensues.
At the GBI office, the turmoil in Will and Angie's life is temporarily set aside as Faith receives a distressing call about her underage son Jeremy, who was present at a club where a shooting incident occurred. Will and Faith rush to the scene, where Jeremy reveals he sustained only minor injuries in the ensuing stampede. Faith is livid with her son for violating the legal drinking age of 21 in Georgia by being at the club.
Meanwhile, Will learns from the investigating officers that the club's owner, Chris Conlan, a former football star and award-winning athlete sidelined by a knee injury, was exiting the club with his wife, Brooke, when a thief snatched Conlan's necklace, accidentally shooting Brooke in the process.
Determined to solve the case swiftly, Will posits that someone inside the club must have tipped off the shooter and wagers he can crack the case within a night. A fellow officer takes up the bet, hinting that the incident might be linked to a series of recent robberies plaguing midtown.
Inside the club, Will scours for clues, ultimately stumbling upon a social media account named Deux Peches. Upon inspecting it, he suspects that the account's operator could be the informer. In collaboration with Faith, they track down the account's owner, Ava Green, and arrest two individuals after breaking into her apartment. However, Ava protests her innocence, asserting that she merely provided information about locations via her social media, having no involvement in the club shooting. The similarity between her car and the getaway vehicle, she claims, was purely coincidental.
Will and Faith then question Pudge, the club's manager and a close friend of Conlan's. Pudge is evasive in his responses. When they return to confront him with evidence of his deceit, they find him dead. Will's suspicions deepen regarding Pudge's proximity to Conlan, noting Pudge's curious lack of contact with his friend following the traumatic event.
The investigation into the theft of Chris Conlan's priceless necklace unfolded like a tangled web of deceit, revealing a complex conspiracy. Conlan, who had cunningly insured his necklace and commissioned a meticulous replica, orchestrated an elaborate insurance fraud scheme. He entrusted his closest companion, Pudge, with the task of publicly "stealing" the faux jewelry, little knowing that fate had other plans. During the execution of this charade, Pudge's hand slipped, resulting in a tragic accident that left Conlan's wife wounded. The subsequent silence between Pudge and Conlan stemmed from their shared complicity in the staged theft – a plan that had never anticipated such a grave turn of events.
It transpired that Conlan's manager, Lucas, harbored an illicit affair with Brooke and yearned to eliminate Conlan as an obstacle. Lucas's treacherous machinations took a dark turn when he armed Pudge with a fully loaded firearm instead of an unloaded one, covertly hoping Pudge would误fatally shoot Conlan, thereby paving the way for Lucas to seize both Conlan's wealth and Brooke's affections. Suspecting Lucas's involvement in Pudge's demise as a desperate bid to cover his tracks and retrieve the murder weapon, Will conceived a plan to ensnare Lucas with Conlan's aid and reclaim the loaded gun.
Unbeknownst to them, Conlan himself was the shadowy figure behind Pudge's untimely end, nursing a grim resolve to also eliminate Lucas and invoke self-defense as his alibi. However, Will's perceptive instincts kicked in, prompting him to intervene just in time to rescue Lucas from Conlan's wrath.
Wracked with guilt and anger at the betrayal, Conlan harbored murderous intentions towards both his friend and manager, only to be restrained by Will's intervention. In the end, both men were apprehended by the authorities for their respective crimes – an accidental shooting stemming from deceit and a daring insurance fraud scheme.
The ultimate resolution of Brooke's predicament remains shrouded in mystery by the narrative's conclusion. Concurrently, Ava finds herself on probation under the watchful eyes of the law, and her path crosses once more with Will, who candidly confesses that his heart still harbors feelings for Angie and that he harbors no romantic designs on Ava.
During his investigation, Will demonstrates his thoughtfulness by providing sustenance to Faith, acutely aware of her diabetic condition and the necessity for vigilant blood sugar management. His perception is keen; he has observed the adjustments she has made to her diet since her fainting spell and the discreet insulin injections she carries with her.
Separate from their ongoing case, Angie and Ormewood are handed another homicide assignment by the APD. They are entrusted with unraveling the tragic demise of Sean Hinchcliff, an affluent real estate broker, in an exclusive neighborhood. Sean met his fate in a grim twist while conducting a property tour, with the murder weapon left ominously at the scene. However, the homeowners' association paints a controversial picture, portraying Sean as a deceitful realtor who engaged in unlawful rent-to-own schemes without any upfront payments.
The complexities surrounding the gentleman escalate dramatically as his entire workforce is grilled at the police precinct. Under interrogation, they divulge that he compensated them in cryptocurrencies and owed them several months' worth of salaries, which they fear have vanished into thin air. This financial void stems from Sean's demise, rendering the funds in his crypto account inaccessible. Nevertheless, a tech-savvy employee, who oversaw the man's technological affairs, asserts that a recent hacking incident drained the account, redirecting the funds to an unknown wallet.
Ormewood dives deeper into the investigative rabbit hole and unearths a secondary venture that Hinchcliff had embarked upon with Gregory Pardee. This illicit partnership involved peddling NFTs featuring performers from strip clubs, with cryptocurrency serving as the medium of exchange. Sean, however, sold the company and pocketed all the profits, abandoning Gregory high and dry. This betrayal served as the catalyst for Gregory's deadly retribution, culminating in Sean's untimely demise.
At Gregory's abode, Angie and Ormewood corner him, encountering a terrified woman in the process. Angie's sharp instincts recognize her as a victim of the notorious sex trafficking ring known as "Zero Mile." Despite her past endeavors to dismantle this organization during her tenure in Vice, she had faced numerous setbacks. Today, however, Angie might have stumbled upon a crucial witness who could hold the key to bringing "Zero Mile" to justice.
As the case draws to a close, Angie returns to Will's residence, where he warmly welcomes her in, inviting her to unwind and share the trials of her arduous day.
