A day after his family confirmed his passing at the age of 71, his son Travis Gibb shared with TMZ that his father had been battling throat cancer and had even suffered a heart attack prior to his demise. However, despite the heart attack occurring weeks before his death, Travis attributed his father's cause of death solely to cancer. Travis previously stated that Donald passed away at his Texas home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Donald first gained fame in 1984, starring in Revenge of the Nerds alongside Timothy Busfield and the late Robert Carradine. His towering stature and muscular physique quickly landed him more tough-guy roles, including Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise in 1987 and Bloodsport with Jean-Claude Van Damme in 1988. Following the news of Donald's passing, Jean-Claude paid tribute to his former castmate by sharing a picture of the two on his Instagram Story with the caption, "Rest in peace, my brother."
