Alia Shawkat is stepping into the spotlight alongside Kristen Stewart to lead "The Wrong Girls," Dylan Meyer's directorial maiden voyage for Neon, which has commenced filming in Los Angeles amidst the aftermath of the recent devastating wildfires. Penned and helmed by Meyer, this cinematic venture chronicles the tale of Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat), inseparable best friends barely scraping by from paycheck to paycheck, until a twist of fate in the form of mistaken identity propels their lives into a whirlwind of chaos.
Rounding out the ensemble with their stellar supporting performances are Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, and Tony Hale. Neon harbors ambitions to unveil this film theatrically across the United States while actively seeking out international distribution rights.
In 2019, Meyer etched her mark with "Rock Bottom," a short film she wrote, directed, and co-produced. "The Wrong Girls" boasts a 29-day production schedule, anticipated to employ approximately 100 individuals daily, 95 percent of whom hail from the local Los Angeles community. This includes the likes of cinematographer Todd Banhazl, singer-songwriter and composer Ty Segall, and costume designer Heidi Bivens.
Adding an intriguing musical element to the film, Philadelphia punk band Mannequin Pussy will lend their unique charm with a live performance at a once-thriving, now-abandoned Los Angeles studio, according to the film's producers.
"The Wrong Girls" is a collaborative effort produced by Maggie McLean, Stewart, and Meyer under Nevermind Pictures, alongside Alex McAtee, James Weaver, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg for Point Grey, and Allison Carter and Jon Read for Savage Rose Productions, in partnership with Neon for production and development. The distribution deal was meticulously negotiated between WME Independent and UTA Independent Film Group. Neon and Stewart's previous collaboration includes Pablo Larraín's 2021 film "Spencer" and David Cronenberg's 2022 dramatic offering "Crimes of the Future."
