Anne Hathaway delivers a chilling performance in "Verity," as the star of "The Devil Wears Prada" portrays her creepiest role yet as the fictional author, Verity Crawford, in the movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover's book. The teaser trailer, released on April 27th, proves just that.
The clip begins with author Lowen Ashleigh (played by Dakota Johnson) wandering through the dimly lit halls of a house where she is living with Verity and her husband, Jeremy Crawford (played by Josh Hartnett). Lowen has been recruited by Jeremy to help finish the manuscript of Verity's next book after she's involved in an accident and unable to write. As she enters a bedroom and walks past Verity sleeping in bed, she makes her way to Jeremy on a nearby couch.

She straddles him, and the two begin to passionately make out—but things then take a dark turn when Lowen pulls away. There, she sees Verity staring back at her with a sinister smile on her face in a trippy hallucination. And when Lowen tries to escape, Verity grabs the back of her head and pulls her in for another kiss. Finally, she is able to break free—but not without Verity causing a bloody injury to her mouth in the process. Clearly disturbed by the mind games, Lowen lets out a blood-curdling scream.
The teaser then flashes through several shots of Verity and Lowen throughout the thriller, including moments where Verity is looking over her shoulders, Lowen is running through the snowy woods, and Verity spies on Lowen and Jeremy hooking up. Scenes flash of glass shattering, blood running down a drain, and even a chilling moment where Verity watches Lowen through her windows.
"Even with my generous warning, you're going to continue to ingest my words," Verity says in a voiceover. "But know one thing: There is no light where we're going. Darkness ahead."
The film—which is set to hit theaters on October 2nd—is the second of Hoover's books to be adapted for the big screen after 2024's "It Ends With Us," which starred Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
