‘The Strangers: Chapter 2’ Director Teases “A Town Invasion” In Second Film; Comic-Con Footage Shows Madelaine Petsch’s Maya At Her Breaking Point

"The Strangers: Chapter 2" aims to strike fear deeper into the hearts of its audience than its predecessor ever did. On Thursday, director Renny Harlin, leading lady Madelaine Petsch, and producer Courtney Solomon unleashed chills at San Diego Comic-Con as they delved into the second installment of the rebooted "The Strangers" film franchise, which debuted in 2008. While the inaugural film in the trilogy confined its terror to a single home, Harlin characterized "Chapter 2" as an expansive "town invasion."

"For me as a director," Harlin enthused, "it was an unparalleled opportunity to elevate a movie from a claustrophobic, confined setting to an entirely different realm, transforming it into an epic narrative without compromising the character depth we had established."

Attendees in Ballroom 20 were treated to an abundance of enthralling footage from "The Strangers: Chapter 2," whetting their appetite until the film's autumn theatrical release.

In the first clip, Petsch, portraying Maya, dashes through a downpour-soaked forest before stumbling upon a road. Dressed only in a hospital gown and bearing a gaping wound on her forehead, Maya darts in front of a passing car, pleading for help. But once inside, her suspicion toward her female rescuers grows. As they lock the doors, Maya's panic intensifies before she eventually concurs to accompany them to their home.

A second scene, executed in a single, seamless shot, provides context for Maya's precarious plight. It commences with Maya attempting to flee an eerily deserted hospital, only to find all exits sealed. Initially, the source of her distress remains unclear, but soon a masked man wielding an axe emerges in the background, eradicating any doubt. Maya tries to distract him to slip away, but he swiftly pursues her down a hallway, the scene dissolving into darkness.

Solomon emphasized that this chilling encounter is merely "the tip of the iceberg" in terms of the horror that unfolds.

"Hospitals," Harlin shared, drawing upon his personal experiences, "are inherently daunting places." He continued, "My father was a doctor, and thus, I spent a considerable portion of my childhood within their walls, those haunting memories still lingering in my mind." He further elaborated, adding that the presence of a stranger stalking Maya through what is supposed to be the sanctuary of a hospital hallway renders her exceptionally vulnerable.

A final snippet of footage revealed in the room makes plain that Maya's encounter with the hospital maniac is far from over. The brief clip depicts Maya locking herself in an unfamiliar bathroom when, out of nowhere, an axe sails through the closed door. After carving a sufficient hole, the intruder grabs Maya by the head and slams her repeatedly against the door, tearing out a clump of her hair. By the time he enters the room, Maya has slipped out the window and resumed her flight.

The team delved further into their decision to shoot all three films simultaneously, with Petsch revealing that she often filmed scenes across the trilogy on the same day, a process with its own unique challenges and advantages.

Their ultimate goal was to craft "the ultimate final girl" by delving deep into Maya's psyche over several days, pushing her to her breaking point.

Naturally, this raises anticipation for "Chapter 3." Solomon assured that the wait won't be protracted, revealing that they aim to finalize post-production by the time "Chapter 2" hits theaters.

Lionsgate's "The Strangers: Chapter 2" will premier in theaters on September 26, 2025.
